If the question is who is going to take A.J. Griffin's spot in the rotation while he's out on the DL, the answer might not be Anthony Ranaudo. Though that was looking like the direction the team was going, Ranaudo was terrible tonight. He issued five walks and five runs, despite not allowing a base hit.
Fantasy Impact
Ranaudo's ERA now stands at just over 17.00. There is no fantasy value.
Anthony Ranaudo, who was just recalled to the big club on Friday, earned the win in relief of an injured A.J. Griffin in the Rangers 10-5 victory over Detroit Saturday.
Fantasy Impact
Ranaudo was not particularly effective, allowing two hits, two runs and walking three in just 2.1 innings of work. He was brought in when Griffin exited the game in the third inning with right shoulder stiffness.
Desperate to find a fifth starter, the Rangers turned to Anthony Ranaudo for today's series finale with the Los Angeles Angels. Ranaudo, however, was not up to the task, as he gave up six earned runs in just 1.2 innings of work in the Angels 10-2 win.
Fantasy Impact
Ranaudo had been competing for the fifth spot in the rotation in the spring and was not that impressive, so it was somewhat surprising the Rangers called him up from Triple-A for this start. I would guess that he will be on the bus back to Round Rock very soon. Look for veteran Wandy Rodriguez or youngster Alex "Chi Chi" Gonzalez (who was very good in the spring) to get the next shot.
The number of pitchers competing for the fifth spot in the Rangers rotation shrunk by one today when Texas optioned Anthony Ranaudo to Triple-A Round Rock.
Fantasy Impact
Ranaudo was one of four pitchers with a legitimate shot at earning a spot in the rotation, but failed to take advantage of the opportunity. In four appearances, including three starts, Ranaudo tossed 14.1 innings, allowing 16 hits and nine runs (eight earned) while walking three and striking out eight. Ranaudo was acquired by the Red Sox in a trade for Robbie Ross Jr., during the offseason.
The Texas Rangers play their home games during Spring Training in Surprise, AZ, but for fans of the team, it should come as no surprise that Anthony Ranaudo was forced to leave his start Thursday with elbow discomfort.
Fantasy Impact
Ranaudo's bid to earn the fifth spot in the rotation hit a couple of speed bumps. First, he allowed three runs and four hits in just 2 1/3 innings of work. Second, he had to leave early when he started feeling some right elbow discomfort. True, he was only slated to throw three innings and 50 pitches (he tossed 44 on the outing), so he came close to reaching his limit. But the fact is that he "felt a grab" after throwing a curveball. Ranaudo went and got treatment and threw a little on the practice field later, and claims it's "nothing major" but the way this team has been snake-bit by injuries over the past year-plus, I'll believe it when I see him take the mound for his next start.
