Chase Whitley pitched seven scoreless innings, with six SO, last night against the Toronto Blue Jays. Unfortunately a blown save later in the game, cost him the win.
Fantasy Impact
This was Whitley's second start of the year for the Yankees. If he continues to pitch this well, he could be a good FA pickup for your fantasy team, or a value play in DFS.
After being re-called earlier on Tuesday, Whitley pitched five innings against the Rays, allowing six hits, one run, one walk, and five strikeouts. With the injury to Masahiro Tanaka, Whitley may earn more starts.
Fantasy Impact
Whitley had a 1.17 ERA in 15 1/3 Spring Training innings and had 12 starts for the Yankees last season, so this will not be the first time in the majors for Whitley. He did have a 5.23 ERA in 75 2/3 innings with the Yankees in 2014, but had a solid 2.14 walks per nine last season. Whitley has a 1.69 ERA in 37 1/3 innings between Spring Training, Triple-A Scranton Wilkes-Barre, and the Yankees this season, posting a 3.44 K:BB.
A very strong spring, a 1.17 ERA over 15 1/3 innings of work, was not enough to keep Whitley on the big league roster. If is presumed that Esmil Rodgers will be the long reliever for the Yankees to begin 2015.
Fantasy Impact
Whitley may have not had the ability to hold a roster spot year long, but he showed enough to prove his fantasy value as a streamable option. On top of his solid spring training statistics, he only walked 2.1 batters per nine innings in 75 2/3 innings pitched in 2014. He did allow 11.2 hits per nine, leading to a 1.48 WHIP, but his FIP (4.14) was more than a run better than his ERA (5.23). Whitley can serve as depth for the Yankees with an injury prone rotation and will get the opportunity to start in Triple-A Scranton Wilkes-Barre.
Chase Whitley got the start on Wednesday and allowed just one run over four innings giving up four hits and striking out six. He did not walk a batter.
Fantasy Impact
Chase Whitley is making it difficult for Yankees manager Joe Girardi not to take him up north when the team breaks camp. With Adam Warren named the fifth starter, Chase Whitley has to be in line for one of the last bullpen spots considering his 1.17 ERA over 15 1/3 spring innings. His fantasy value would be limited as a middle or long relief option and with the Yankees strong bullpen candidates, he very well could be sent down to Triple-A Scranton to continue to start and be stretched out for when the Yankees need another starter. The decision on the final 25-man roster will come over the next couple days.
Yankees pitcher, Chase Whitley, went one inning on Wednesday allowing his first earned run of the spring on two hits and added a strikeout.
Fantasy Impact
Chase Whitley is making a strong case for a spot on the 25-man roster. He now owns a 0.82 ERA on the spring in 11 innings of work. He pitched reasonably well last summer while with the Yankees and is making himself a strong candidate for a spot in the bullpen, perhaps as the long reliever. If he is sent to Tripe-A Scranton, he is an option to be called up for a start when the need arises. As a long reliever, he will not have any fantasy value and will only hold value if he holds a rotation spot for a long period of time.
