Barry Cofield set to return in Week 11

Redskins DL Barry Cofield is set to return in Week 11 from a high ankle sprain suffered in the season opener at Houston. The Redskins defense has played well at times but has had little depth since Cofield went down. The question is: Where will he play? Chris Baker has excelled at nose tackle in his absence. Redskins DC Jim Haslett said "He can play end, nose. He’ll play nickel, we’ll work him back in, kind of like we did with Stephen [Bowen], and see where he’s at conditioning-wise.”

Fantasy Impact

Cofield may not get an ideal number of snaps in his first week back and is a marginal IDP player, even in leagues that utilize three DL starters. It's probably safe to ignore Cofield for now.

Cofield likely to return in Week 11

Redskins' NT Barry Cofield has been rehabbing his right ankle sprain ever since suffering the injury in Week 1 at Houston on Sept. 7. Cofield will not be able to return to practice in six weeks from the date he was placed on the injured reserve "designated to return" list, and he can't play in a game until eight weeks after it. His first week of eligibility is Week 10, the team's bye, so he's eyeing Week 11's matchup against Tampa Bay as his return game. Cofield was not seen wearing a cast or a walking boot and is considered to be on schedule with his recovery.

Fantasy Impact

This banged-up Redskins' defense needs his skill up front. Cofield has had a penchant for clogging running lanes during his career, and while the team's rushing defense is still sound, they could be even better with Cofield around. However, when Cofield gets back he has little to no fantasy value. His value to his real team is tough to replace though.

Cofield placed on short-term IR on Tuesday

Washington defensive tackle Barry Cofield was placed on the team's short-term injured reserve list on Tuesday after suffering a high right ankle sprain in Sunday's loss at Houston. He will be eligible to practice six weeks from today, and will be able to play in a game eight weeks from today.

Fantasy Impact

If for whatever reason you had Cofield in your IDP league, you should drop him immediately ... not that he had any fantasy value in IDP leagues to begin with. His value in reality far exceeded any of his value in fake football. The 'Skins will roll with the current six healthy defensive lineman they have on their roster in the meantime.

Washington expects Cofield to miss significant time

Washington nose tackle Barry Cofield suffered what is believed to be a high ankle sprain late in the first half of Sunday's game against Houston. He wore a walking boot on Monday and took an MRI as well, but the results are not yet known. Cofield also has a sore groin and head coach Jay Gruden said Cofield could be placed on short-term IR. Chris Baker will fill in at nose tackle and Jarvis Jenkins would get the start at left end during Cofield's absence.

Fantasy Impact

Cofield's big body, experience, and run stopping savvy will surely be missed. High-ankle sprains usually take around four weeks to get over at least, so let's hope it's not quite that bad. Regardless, Cofield has virtually no fantasy value in IDP leagues when healthy.

Cofield wearing boot

Redskins defensive tackle Barry Cofield reportedly has a boot on his right foot.

Fantasy Impact

It's pretty unfortunate for one of the NFL's better DTs out there. Regardless, Cofield had little fantasy value in IDP leagues before the injury, especially since he plays in a 3-4 defense.
