Richie Shaffer boosts roster bid with two more hits

1B/3B Richie Shaffer went 2-for-3 with a double and an RBI-single in the Indians' Cactus League win over the Rockies on Thursday.

Fantasy Impact

The non-roster invitee manned third base again as the competition heats up to fill the void that will be left by Jason Kipnis' injury. Richie Shaffer leads the Indians with four home runs in Spring Training but with 21 strikeouts to just three walks. He also leads in at-bats, showing that the Indians want to get a good look at the powerful slugger, before making their decision. If Shaffer gets the opportunity to be the Indians' everyday third baseman, he could produce similar numbers to the Reds' Adam Duvall last year.

Richie Shaffer hits third Cactus League home run

1B/3B Richie Shaffer went 2-for-5 with two runs, including a solo home run, his third of Spring Training.

Fantasy Impact

The 26-year-old is a long shot to make the Opening Day roster, despite the injury to second baseman Jason Kipnis. Richie Shaffer was claimed on waivers by the Indians and will likely start the season in Triple-A. He can play first base and third base, and if he can recapture his 2015 Triple-A form of 19 HR with .937 OPS, he could be a valuable contributor when more injuries hit the Indians.

Richie Shaffer launches his first home run of spring

1B Richie Shaffer went 1-for-3 with a solo home run and a sac-fly to score Edwin Encarnacion in Sunday's Cactus League win over the Padres.

Fantasy Impact

The 25-year-old played third base on Sunday and unless there is a significant injury, there is no playing time at 1B or DH for Richie Shaffer. He entered last season as a highly-rated prospect having posted a .937 OPS in Triple-A. 2016 did not turn out as expected with .695 OPS in Triple-A and .752 OPS in 20 games for the Rays. The right-hander was claimed and released by four teams before being claimed by the Indians and clearing waivers. He will start the season in Triple-A but could provide useful contributions midseason in the majors at third base or the outfield.

Richie Shaffer gets promoted from Triple-A Durham

The Rays recalled infielder Richie Shaffer from Triple-A Durham.

Fantasy Impact

After hitting 19 home runs in only 282 plate appearances for Triple-A Durham last season, Shaffer, the former 1st round pick, has only hit eight home runs to go with a .227/.335/.351 line in 2016. He'll receive minimal playing time before the Rays activate Matt Duffy from his rehab assignment.

Richie Shaffer rips pinch-hit home run in Rays' defeat

Pinch-hitting for Evan Longoria in the 8th inning, Rays prospect third baseman Richie Shaffer blasted his third home run in the majors, as the Rays were defeated 10-4 by the Red Sox on Saturday.

Fantasy Impact

The Rays are essentially out of it at this point, and we may start to see more playing time for the youngster Shaffer the rest of the way. Shaffer has a good bat, but it hasn't translated in his short stint in the majors to this point. He was called up in August, but since he's been promoted at the start of September, he's hitting .182/.250/.364 with two homers and two RBI in 22 at-bats.
