San Francisco Giants outfielder Luis Gonzalez underwent surgery to repair a herniated disc in his lower back Tuesday, according to manager Gabe Kapler.
Fantasy Impact
The 27-year-old outfielder could miss half the season after undergoing the knife but is expected to play in the 2023 season. Gonzalez appeared in 98 games for the Giants in 2022, hitting .254 with four homers, 10 steals, and a .683 OPS across 350 trips to the plate. He also raked to a .289 average with six homers, four steals, and a .941 OPS across 20 games at the Triple-A level a season ago.
Luis Gonzalez went 1-for-4 Saturday, hitting a two-run home run in the Giants' 5-4 win over the Cubs.
Fantasy Impact
Gonzalez has picked up hits in five of his last eight games for the Giants, scoring three runs and driving in three runs in that span. The outfielder carries a .281 batting average with 24 runs scored, four home runs, and 29 runs batted in through 65 games this season.
The San Francisco Giants placed OF Luis Gonzalez on the 10-day IL Thursday with a lower back strain, retroactive to June 22. They recalled Donovan Walton from Triple-A Sacramento.
Fantasy Impact
Gonzalez was scratched from Wednesday's lineup, and a subsequent MRI showed the strain. San Francisco gave no timetable for his return. In 49 games, the 26-year-old has been a boon to fantasy managers, slashing .302/.361/.477 with seven stolen bases and 20 runs scored. He may not be worth a hold with the return of LaMonte Wade set to return soon, so keep an eye on the Giants' outfield situation if you roster Gonzalez.
Luis Gonzalez was scratched from Wednesday's lineup with lower back tightness.
Fantasy Impact
Gonzalez hasn't had many days off of late, and it sounds like Gabe Kapler is just being proactive. On the year, he's batting .302 with three home runs and seven steals, and has been a viable outfielder in mixed leagues. Expect him back in the lineup soon.
Luis Gonzalez went 2-for-4 with two singles and a run scored in Monday's 2-1 loss to the Braves.
Fantasy Impact
Gonzalez is on fire at the plate, as he extended his hitting streak to six games on Monday with his 10th multi-hit performance of the season. The 26-year-old is flashing his fantasy potential with the lone downside being the lack of power he has shown, hitting just three homers in 156 at-bats this season.
