Walter Thurmond
S - FA
2024 Outlook
Availability
According to Adam Schefter, former Seahawks, Giants and Eagles defensive back Walter Thurmond is retiring from the NFL at age 28.
Fantasy Impact
Thurmond received scant interest in free agency this year amid reports he might retire to preserve health, and now it becomes official. Thurmond had a career year last year with the Eagles and could've cashed in as a cornerback/safety hybrid, but decided to hand his cleats up instead.
Walter Thurmond followed up last week's game against the Dolphins where he had his first sack of the season with another sack this week against the Buccaneers in a blowout loss.
Fantasy Impact
Not much went right for the Eagles defense on Sunday but if you just looked at the stats you would see that Thurmond continued his strong statistical season with 5 tackles and a sack and forced fumble on the day. Thurmond has been one of the brightspots on the Eagles defense and is a nice IDP play at the safety position.
Walter Thurmond made the switch from CB to Safety during the offseason and it has paid off big time for the Eagles as he continues to make plays in the Eagles secondary.
Fantasy Impact
Thurmond had 4 solo tackles and an interception against the Saints on Sunday. Thurmond now has 3 interceptions in the Eagles first 5 games and leads all NFL safeties with that number. If he is still on your IDP waiver wire you better scoop him up quickly.
Walter Thurmond locked down the starting safety position during the preseason and he continued his success in Monday Night's loss to the Falcons.
Fantasy Impact
Thurmond finished with 6 tackles and one for a loss to go along with an interception against the Falcons. He looked comfortable in his role in the secondary and looks to be a good option to make plays going forward.
Thurmond continues to make plays for the Eagles secondary. He was an underrated free agency signing and has only helped to add depth to the Eagles defensive backs. After making the shift from CB to Safety, Thurmond has showed he deserves a role among the starting DB's. Thurmond returned an interception 28-yards for a touchdown against the Packers in the teams preseason game.
Fantasy Impact
"It’s just another example of what he does in practice every day," defensive coordinator Bill Davis said of Thurmond. "He had at least an interception a day and he showed up the last couple of games. He’s always in the right spot, around the ball. He’s got a great feel for the game and tonight he was in the right place at the right time and took it to the house. Hopefully we’ll see more of that. "Those are the things we saw in him when we signed him. He has great vision and good football instincts. He sees the field well." He remains an under the radar pickup in deep IDP leagues.
