Week 17 Outlook
Availability
NFL Network's Ian Rapoport reports Houston Texans defensive lineman Vince Wilfork said "he thinks he played his last football game" in Saturday's Divisional Round Playoff loss to the New England Patriots and that he will "take [the] time to consider and make sure."
Fantasy Impact
If Wilfork walks away, he is poised to be Canton bound. The 35-year-old interior lineman played 13 seasons in the NFL with two teams, the Patriots (2004-2014) and the Texans (2015-2016). He totaled 559 career tackles, 16.0 sacks, 26 deflected passes, three interceptions and four forced fumbles. As a member of the Patriots, Wilfork won two Super Bowls, appeared in five Pro Bowls and was a first-team All-Pro selection in 2012. Expect a decision on whether or not Wilfork will retire sooner rather than later.
Vince Wilfork made his presence known on the very first play of the game. Unfortunately he was called offsides and never registered a tackle against the Kansas City Chiefs. After that, Wilfork failed to register a tackle the rest of the game.
Fantasy Impact
It was a disappointing day for the Texans defense all around. For Wilfork, his appearances on HBO's Hard Knocks continue to remain his highlight as a member of the Houston Texans. Wilfork will look to improve upon his statistics, and ideally his total number of snaps, next week against the Carolina Panthers next week.
Vince Wilfork annouced that he will sign with the Houston Texans. He signed a two-year deal worth $9 million, with $5 million guaranteed.
Fantasy Impact
J.J. Watt may have had the best comment when he tweeted out "haha" after news of the Wilfork signing took place. At age 33 with, it's hard to know how much more Wilfork has in the tank. That being said, he played 73.4% of the Patriots' snaps last season and will still likely command double teams in Houston. For IDP leagues, J.J. Watt's value should go up. The Texans' defense should also improve if Wilfork can provide a full season's worth of work.
According to NFL.com's Ian Rapoport Vince Wilfork hasn't ruled out re-signing with the Patriots.
Fantasy Impact
A day after losing their most prized possession Darrelle Revis, the Patriots would take any good news. Getting their Captain and long time nose tackle could help. Wilfork has been the ultimate Patriot over the years re-working his contract as needed while sticking with the team. The Patriots will have to contend with Bill O'Brien's Texans for Wilfork.
Vince Wilfork has announced the New England Patriots will not pick up his option, therefore Wilfork will hit free agency.
Fantasy Impact
The Patriots will not be picking up the two year option on Wilfork which will result in him now entering the free agency pool. Wilfork has been a mainstay in the middle of a revamped Patriots defense. Wilfork has restructured and worked with the Patriots over the past few years with his contract but this may be the end of a solid run with the Patriots. Wilfork will look to fill the middle of a contenders defense!
