Baltimore Ravens brass told the media defensive back Matt Elam is "not in our plans " for 2017 in the wake of his arrest early Sunday morning.
Fantasy Impact
Elam was arrested in Florida early Sunday morning on multiple drug charges that include possession of a controlled substance. In the wake of his arrest, the Ravens are expected to move on from the troubled defensive back. Elam will face disciplinary action from the NFL as well and likely begin 2017, if he is on a team, serving a suspension.
Matt Elam's torn bicep will be surgically repaired, and as a result the third-year strong safety will be looking at a recovery period of four to six months.
Fantasy Impact
Even with very quick recovery, Elam will miss the vast majority of the 2015 season. Will Hill, with whom Elam split playing time each of the past two seasons, will see his playing time increase significantly. Hill will almost certainly rack up 75+ tackles, and there's a possibility he reaches the 100-tackle mark, making him an intriguing player in IDP leagues.
Baltimore Ravens S Matt Elam tore his biceps during a full-contact practice over the weekend, an injury that could sideline him for the entire 2015 season.
Fantasy Impact
A former third-round pick, Elam has struggled to live up to expectations with the Ravens. The injury will further delay his development, and it remains to be seen how much time the Ravens are willing to continue to invest in the third-year player.
The Baltimore Ravens are not ready to give up on Matt Elam. After last season's disappointing run, the organization is committed to do everything they can to help him. After all, he was a first round pick in the 2013 NFL Draft. Ravens General Manager Ozzie Newsome and Head Coach John Harbaugh have stated more than once "he has to get better for us." Elam's actions on the field, or lack thereof, caused the Ravens to sign former Houston Texan's star veteran safety Kendrick Lewis to help improve the injured-ridden secondary from last season. Sounds like Elam is on probation and the clock is ticking.
Fantasy Impact
Elam had a reputation through college for making big hits despite his short statue. At 5'10", he was one of the top safeties in the 2013 draft class, projected in the first round. However, last season, he was anything but top. He recorded 50 tackles with one forced fumble. He allowed big plays to happen behind him and missed more than a few tackles. Elam lacked the aggressiveness and on some plays, he seemed to be out of sync. Because of his height, he must work twice as hard to spread his frame around, over and on top to bring down any receiver. Last season he failed to live up to his first round standards.
