Larry Rountree III
RB -
Week 12 Outlook
Availability
As reflected on the team website, former Chargers RB Larry Rountree III has agreed to a deal with the Houston Texans.
Fantasy Impact
Rountree spent the last two years as a low-depth chart backup behind Austin Ekeler in LA and now joins a Texans' backfield with obvious competition ahead of him. Dameon Pierce is the clear lead-back, and the Texans also brought in Devin Singletary to supplement Pierce. Given the circumstances, it is hard to see Rountree earning much playing time in 2023.
Larry Rountree III was released by the Chargers following their preseason debut.
Fantasy Impact
Rountree has not flashed since being selected by the Chargers in the sixth-round of the 2021 NFL draft. Additionally, Rountree was significantly outperformed by the rest of the RB group in Los Angeles in their preseason debut. While the team as a whole averaged 6.8 yards per carry, Rountree showed little burst as he carried the ball five times for just nine yards (1.8 YPC). The Chargers will head into Week 2 of the preseason with Joshua Kelley, Isaiah Spiller, Elijah Dotson, and Tyler Hoosman all competing for a backup role behind Austin Ekeler. In an offense that is expected to take a giant leap forward in 2023, whoever earns the backup RB role will be a viable handcuff option.
Larry Rountree III took five carries for nine yards on Saturday against the Rams.
Fantasy Impact
Rountree appears to be behind Austin Ekeler, Joshua Kelley and Isaiah Spiller in the Chargers backfield at this point in time.
Larry Rountree III has rejoined the Chargers, signing a practice squad contract with Los Angeles on Thursday according to The Athletic’s Daniel Popper.
Fantasy Impact
Rountree rejoins the Chargers after being released earlier in the week to make room for the signing of Sony Michel. The former sixth-round pick rushed for 87 yards on 36 carries and scored once last season for the Chargers. Los Angeles remains high on Rountree but offensive coordinator Joe Lombardi said they “felt so highly about Sony that we wanted to make a move and it becomes a numbers game.”
The Los Angeles Charged waived Larry Rountree III Wednesday to make room for newly-acquired running back Sony Michel.
Fantasy Impact
Rountree was battling Joshua Kelley and Isaiah Spiller in camp for the backup RB role to Austin Ekeler. The second-year back figured to play a minor part in the offense, but Michel’s surprise availability spelled the end of Rountree’s tenure with Chargers for now.
