The agent for former Iowa State and current New Orleans Pelican guard, Bryce Dejean-Jones, has confirmed that the 23-year-old has died of a gunshot wound to the abdomen.
Fantasy Impact
It's terrible news for the NBA and Dejean-Jones' family. After playing multiple 10-day contracts with the club, he was signed to a three-year contract in February. He was undrafted in 2015, but ended up starting 11 games for the Pelicans before undergoing season-ending surgery for a broken right wrist.
Dejean-Jones has a fractured wrist and will be out indefinitely for the Pelicans. Dejean-Jones will undergo surgery tomorrow.
Fantasy Impact
Dejean-Jones was receiving about 15-20 minutes a game starting for the Pelicans. He was probably going to lose playing time soon anyway with Eric Gordon nearing a return.
Bryce Dejean-Jones has been playing well enough lately that several teams are attempting to sign him now that his second 10-day contract has expired. During the contract negotiations, he will not be in the Pelicans' starting lineup.
Fantasy Impact
Dejean-Jones will be replaced in the Pelicans lineup by Toney Douglas. Monitor the situation to see which team signs him and where he will fall into their depth chart.
After having a career night in New Orleans on Thursday, Dejean-Jones returned to Earth as he managed just one point, one rebound and two assists in 20 minutes in Cleveland. With Tyreke Evans out until after the All-Star break, however, expect Dejean-Jones to record at least three more starts for the Pelicans.
Fantasy Impact
It was a painful performance to behold for anyone hoping to cash in on the rookie's recent success, but shouldn't have been completely unexpected with such a green talent. He remains a low-end value for deeper leagues, but will continue to be an intriguing pick in DFS leagues as long as Evans remains out.
Tyreke Evans will miss another game, giving Dejean-Jones another opportunity to start at shooting guard. In Thursday's loss to the Lakers, Dejean-Jones recorded a career-high 17 points (6-of-10 FG, 1-of-3 3PT, 4-of-8 FT) to go along with nine rebounds (tied career-high), one assist, two steals and one turnover in 43 minutes.
Fantasy Impact
He makes for a nice DFS option as of now, but Dejean-Jones is quickly gaining fantasy respect in other formats. If Evans (knee) isn't able to shake his injury woes, the Pelicans could consider shutting him down for the rest of the season. If that's the case, Dejean-Jones could, at least, be worth an add in deeper leagues, as long as Eric Gordon remains out or plays limited minutes.
