Washington Nationals reliever Ryan Madson is being traded to the Los Angeles Dodgers for minor league pitcher Andrew Istler, reports Ken Gurnick of MLB.com on Twitter.
Fantasy Impact
Madson should immediately slot into a setup role with the Dodgers and could see save opportunities if current closer Kenley Jansen continues to struggle. Midnight tonight is the deadline for players to be rostered in order to be eligible to participate in the postseason.
Ryan Madson gave up a walk-off grand slam in the Nationals' 4-3 loss to the Cubs on Sunday. This was his third blown save of the season and his record fell to 2-5.
Fantasy Impact
Madson also told reporters he has been suffering from shooting pain in his legs over the past few weeks. Thankfully he toughed it out to blow the game for his team. It's unclear whether this injury will force a DL trip for Madson, but it's safe to say his status as closer is in danger. This will probably devolve into a full blown committee until either Sean Doolittle or Kelvin Herrera return.
Ryan Madson will fill in for the injured Kelvin Herrera as the team's closer. Herrera was filling in for the injured Sean Doolittle.
Fantasy Impact
Herrera is dealing with an arm injury while Doolittle is coming back from a fractured food, so assuming Madson is able to produce he could be a valuable pickup down the stretch. If he falters, look for Koda Glover to get a shot at the ninth-inning role.
Ryan Madson pitched a scoreless ninth inning to secure his fourth save in the Nationals' 5-4 win over the Mets on Thursday.
Fantasy Impact
Kelvin Herrera faced the top of the Mets' order in the eighth inning, leaving Madson to face hitters 7-8-9 in the ninth. Madson gave up a harmless single to Kevin Plawecki, but two groundballs quickly had the Nationals in the win column. He probably won't be getting saves on a regular basis even with Sean Doolittle out, and Doolittle is supposed to return immediately after the All-Star break.
Ryan Madson entered a tie game in the eighth and allowed two home runs and fell to 1-3 after the Nationals lost to the Blue Jays 8-6 on Sunday.
Fantasy Impact
Madson had only allowed one earned run all month prior to this start, but he served up back-to-back home runs, allowing the Blue Jays to take a late lead. Madson hasn't been quite as effective this season with a 4.56 ERA compared to his 1.83 ERA last season. The veteran still has a 3.12 FIP and these were the first two home runs he has surrendered all year, so he's still pitched relatively well despite a high ERA. Madson will most likely turn things around, but doesn't have much fantasy value outside of a holds league anyway.
