Availability
Colin Cowgill and the San Diego Padres have agreed to a minor-league deal. The agreement does include an invitation to spring training.
Fantasy Impact
Cowgill has a .234 average and 12 home runs over six professional season. Cowgill should be ignored on all accounts.
On Wednesday, the Indians activated 3B/OF Lonnie Chisenhall from the DL and optioned OF Collin Cowgill to Triple-A Columbus.
Fantasy Impact
Collin Cowgill did nothing with the bat to warrant an extended stay in the big leagues. He hit .083 (1-for-12) in nine games, striking out in half his at-bats. He is a career .234 hitter although only reached .188 in 55 games with the Angels last year. It is difficult to see Cowgill being fantasy relevant this season.
OF Collin Cowgill went 0-for-3 in the win over the Rays on Wednesday.
Fantasy Impact
The 29-year-old has yet to get on base as a member of the Indians. In five games, he has gone 0-for-8 with six strikeouts. Cowgill is a career .234 hitter but only hit .188 in Spring Training. When Lonnie Chisenhall and Michael Brantley return from injury, expect Cowgill to be used primarily as a defensive-switch. It is difficult to see any fantasy value here, no matter how deep the league.
OF Collin Cowgill has been confirmed on the Indians' Opening Day 25-man roster. The 29-year-old went 1-for-3 with two strikeouts in Tuesday's tie vs. Angels.
Fantasy Impact
Expect Collin Cowgill to see siginificant playing time in the depleted Indians' outfield, especially whilst Lonnie Chisenhall is on the DL and Michael Brantley is out of action. Cowgill shares the lead with Rajai Davis with three stolen bases and has hit two home runs in 21 Spring Training games. He is expected to get at-bats in both right field and center field. The right-hander has a career .528 OPS vs. RHP and .733 OPS vs. LHP.
ESPN reports that Josh Hamilton will undergo shoulder surgery on February 4 and is expected to miss anywhere from three to eight weeks. Possible replacements are Matt Joyce and Collin Cowgill.
Fantasy Impact
Cowgill enters his third year with the Angels bearing a career line of .242/.306/.339 and a 25% K rate. In 2014, his AVG was .250 despite a strong BABIP of .331. This may have resulted from a combination of a 49% ground ball rate and a complete lack of speed since tallying 25 SBs in AA ball back in 2010. Cowgill will turn 29 during the 2015 season, so his best years may have already passed; fantasy players should pass on him as well.
