Fantasy Football Injury Report: Week 3

Fantasy Football Injury Report: Week 3

Welcome to the dreaded injury report. Professional football is a violent game, and your fantasy players are going to miss time because of it. Week 3 was bad in terms of volume of injuries, but not necessarily in severity. Regardless, hopefully, you don’t have many names on this list.

Julio Jones (WR – ATL)
Julio Jones suffered a back injury in Sunday’s dramatic win over the Lions. It is unclear how serious it is. Jones lobbied to return to the game but ultimately was held out. It doesn’t sound too serious, though. He should be fine for week 3.

Kelvin Benjamin (WR – CAR)
It looks like Kelvin Benjamin escaped with just a scare on Sunday. He injured the same knee he had ACL surgery on a couple years ago, but it does not look overly serious. He very well may play next week. Devin Funchess would be the number one option if Benjamin were unable to go, but right now, I think he’s more likely to play than not.

Doug Baldwin (WR – SEA)
Doug Baldwin tweaked his groin late in Seattle’s loss to Tennessee. He was seen standing on the sideline holding his groin. That’s not an encouraging sign. Groin injuries tend to linger, but as we saw with Rob Gronkowski last week, they can be overcome in seven days. Hopefully, Baldwin is out there next week. Unfortunately, the Seahawks play Sunday night so if there is any doubt about Baldwin’s availability, fantasy owners will have to either make a call early or gamble.

Michael Crabtree (WR – OAK)
Michael Crabtree elevated and extended for a high Derek Carr throw and was hung out to dry. He took a shot to his chest and didn’t play a snap afterward. He doesn’t appear to have suffered anything serious, but be sure to monitor his status throughout the week.

Melvin Gordon (RB – LAC)
Melvin Gordon exited Sunday’s game for a little bit after reaggravating his knee injury. He eventually came back, and while I’d expect him to be limited in practice, there’s no indication he is at any risk of missing next week’s game.

Matt Forte (RB – NYJ)
Matt Forte suffered a toe injury in Sunday’s beatdown of the Dolphins. Bilal Powell also scored his first touchdown of the season. Coincidence? I think not. If Forte misses time, Powell might finally have a chance to return at least some semblance of his draft value.

Darren Sproles (RB – PHI)
The Eagles’ best RB broke his forearm and tore his ACL on Sunday. He is done for the season. Some combination of Wendell Smallwood, Corey Clement, and LeGarrette Blount will pick up the slack. None of these backs are worth owning.

Samaje Perine (RB – WAS)
The rookie filling in for an injured Rob Kelley got himself injured Sunday night after taking a helmet to his hand/wrist area resulting in a fumble. Regardless of his status, he won’t be relevant going forward as his fumble will likely land him in the permanent doghouse with Jay Gruden. Kelley was close to playing Sunday night so he should play next week. The only concern would be the Redskins holding him out one more week to get to the bye and be sure he’s fully healthy. If that were to occur, Mack Brown would handle the early-down and goal-line role, but we are likely to see a lot more Chris Thompson regardless of who “starts.”
