Coach Mike McDaniel noted after Sunday's 34-10 win over the Jets that De'Von Achane (rib) was available to return to the contest in an emergency, David Furones of the South Florida Sun Sentinel reports.
With Achane out, the Dolphins turned the backfield over to Jaylen Wright. He has been eating into Ollie Gordon's status as Achane's handcuff the last few games and that was completely apparent versus the Jets.
Per Next Gen Stats...Wright rushed for a career-high 107 yards and a touchdown on 24 carries in the Dolphins' Week 14 victory over the Jets. Wright stepped in for De'Von Achane, who exited with a rib injury midway through the second quarter. Wright forced five missed tackles on the ground, tying his career high, and gained 30 yards after missed tackles and 91 yards after contact, both career highs. He also recorded three explosive runs (10+ yards) in the game after having only one such play entering today this season.
Gordon botched the handoff on his first carry but scored late in the game. Always a threat in the red zone regardless of the availability of the other Miami RBs.
Both guys need to be added...but Wright is the "right" Dolphins RB to add off waivers. It's handcuff szn after all...and this isn't the first time Achane has been a bit banged up this season. Also, given that it's a rib injury - pain tolerance will likely influence Achane's snaps/touches. Also re-injury seems highly likely.
The Dolphins rushed for 239 yards in Week 14 against the Jets, the most since Week 3, 2023, against the Broncos (350).

One of my biggest misses this season was being in on Jaylen Wright. Or was it? Starting the season injured, Wright lost his backup job to rookie Ollie Gordon. Since returning from his knee injury in Week 3, Wright had 65 rushing yards and one reception for one yard before Week 14. However, after De'Von Achane left with a rib injury on Sunday, Wright exploded for 24 carries, 107 yards and a touchdown against the Jets. Although he failed to catch any of his three targets, the explosive second-year back made a splash. Monitor Achane's status and bid on Wright accordingly. Typically, players can play through rib injuries with some painkillers. But if Achane doesn't suit up in Week 15, Wright could be in for another solid day. This week, the Dolphins take on the AFC North-leading Steelers, who allow the ninth-fewest fantasy points to opposing running backs. It's a tough matchup, but Wright's 24 carries from Week 14 suggest he would have a decent fantasy floor if Achane is ruled out.
