This Week Outlook
Availability
Malcolm Smith was released by the 49ers on Tuesday after two years with the team.
Fantasy Impact
Smith appeared in just 12 games for the team after signing a five-year, $26.5 million deal in 2017. The Super Bowl XLVIII MVP could draw serious interest from teams in need of veteran help at linebacker.
Malcolm Smith suffered the torn pec Saturday during a training camp practice. The 49ers signed Smith in the offseason to a five-year deal hoping he could be a cornerstone in their rebuild.
Fantasy Impact
Smith was primed for a solid IDP season playing behind a massive line in front of him and playing next to an all-pro in NaVorro Bowman to attract all the attention off of him. This is a big blow to the depth of their linebacking core and it leaves Ray-Ray Armstrong and Reuben Foster to compete for a starting job. This is also a big blow to the defense because it is a similar defense to what he ran during his time in Seattle where he was able to become a Super Bowl MVP. His familiarity with the defense is irreplaceable with the current roster. Smith's injury creates an opportunity for Foster to seize the starting job for week one and with his play early on in camp, he appears right now to stand the most to gain with this injury in IDP leagues and if he does land the job it puts him immediately into the LB2 conversation.
Super Bowl MVP Malcolm Smith is expected to sign with the San Francisco 49ers when free agency begins.
Fantasy Impact
Malcolm Smith had a nice season in Oakland last year recording 103 tackles, one interception, and two forced fumbles. Smith should earn a starting nod in what seems to be a pretty decent 49ers team being put together. Smith would be a nice value add in any late IDP draft.
Malcolm Smith adds one interception and nine tackles to his season total.
Fantasy Impact
Malcolm Smith recorded his first interception of the year to go along with his nine solo tackles in Week 11. His season statistics now stand at 50 solo tackles, one interception and one fumble recovery.
Malcolm Smith collects eight tackles in victory over Denver.
Fantasy Impact
Malcolm Smith's eight solo tackles brought his season total to 41. While his ability to force turnovers has been somewhat limited this year, along with the fact that he missed one game, Smith's statistics are still on pace to nearly match his career high of 99 tackles.
