Derrick Johnson ruptured his achilles on Thursday Night against the Raiders, going down without contact on the play. He is done for the season.
Fantasy Impact
Losing Derrick Johnson is a tough blow to a Kansas City Chiefs defense that relies on him to be a leader both on and off the field.
Kansas City Chiefs linebacker Derrick Johnson was all over the place against the Houston Texans in Week 2, notching 11 total tackles to go along with a sack and quarterback hit.
Fantasy Impact
It was a great showing by Johnson in the stats column, and a reminder that even at his advanced age he is still one of the premier inside linebackers - both in real life and in fantasy. He is a solid LB1 in all IDP formats given his every-down role on defense.
According to ESPN's Ed Werder, the Kansas City Chiefs re-signed pass rusher Derrick Johnson to a three-year, $21 million contract on Wednesday.
Fantasy Impact
Derrick Johnson is the second pass rusher Kansas re-signed on Wednesday. They locked up veteran Tamba Hali earlier in the day. Johnson finished 2015 with 116 tackles, four sacks, two forced fumbles, two interceptions and eight passes defended. His solid stat line helped contribute to a surprisingly productive fantasy football defense.
Johnson was in on eight tackles Sunday. He had six solo tackles with two assists, and one was a sack. This was a strong first game back since his Achilles injury in 2014.
Fantasy Impact
Now that he is healthy Johnson should have a strong IDP campaign in 2015. This first game is a fairly strong indicator that he is back in the groove, and will be productive.
Kansas City Chiefs LB Derrick Thomas is excited to return to the practice field for training camp after an Achilles injury cut short his 2014 campaign.
Fantasy Impact
Johnson had over 100 combined tackles per season from 2010-13 before injury limited him to one game in 2014. He is now 32, and coming off a significant injury, so it remains to be seen what level he'll be playing at in 2015.
