The Las Vegas Raiders waived RB Darwin Thompson Sunday.
Fantasy Impact
Thompson was brought in as a depth option by the Raiders prior to Josh Jacobs signing his contract. With Jacobs and the Raiders agreeing to a one-year contract, Thompson was the odd man out in the Raiders’ running back room. Thompson will look to join another team prior to the start of the 2023 season.
After signing Damien Williams on Friday, the Raiders have signed another former Chiefs RB, Darwin Thompson, to a deal, according to Adam Schefter.
Fantasy Impact
Thompson is the latest acquisition of a team who has a known RB issue, with 2022's leading rusher Josh Jacob's situation not yet resolved. With the uncertainty surrounding whether or not Jacobs will suit up to begin the season, the Raiders have brought in Thomson who has not registered a regular-season snap since 2020. It is unlikely Thompson finds himself with regular-season playing time in 2023, as Jacobs may still play and the Raiders have Zamir White in line to start if he does not. Thompson does not belong on fantasy rosters at this time.
The Tampa Bay Buccaneers announced that they have signed free agent running back Darwin Thompson to their practice squad.
Fantasy Impact
This comes after Thompson was waived by the Chiefs on Monday after spending his first two seasons with the team. The Buccaneers could use a speedy, pass-catching running back at the moment with Giovani Bernard reportedly set to miss some time with a high-ankle sprain, so the signing makes sense. While he could possess some fantasy value if promoted to the active roster, Thompson is only worth keeping an eye on at the moment.
Former Kansas City Chiefs RB Darwin Thompson was waived on Monday, per beat writer Sam McDowell.
Fantasy Impact
Thompson was held to a limited role during his two years in Kansas City, rushing 27 times for 97 yards and a touchdown in 2020. The 24-year old running back's ability to be a reliable target out of the backfield is his best asset, so expect a team to sign him off of waivers soon as an added depth piece. Thompson should be off of the redraft radar in 2021 but does make for an interesting acquisition in dynasty leagues, depending on where he is signed next.
Kansas City Chiefs RB Darwin Thompson carried eight times for 49 yards and hauled in two receptions for seven yards during a 17-10 preseason Week 2 win over the Arizona Cardinals on Friday.
Fantasy Impact
Thompson enters his third year in the league with the Chiefs and looked solid with his opportunity, averaging 6.1 YPC and hauling in both of his targets. It's a crowded backfield led by Clyde Edwards-Helaire, and a lot of the passing work could go to Jerick McKinnon in 2021, so Thompson should be left on league waiver wires unless Edwards-Helaire's ankle injury suffered on Friday turns out to be worse than expected.
