Week 17 Outlook
Availability
After going 0 for 3 in field goals on Sunday against Buffalo, Detroit released Henery on Monday. The Lions will bring in a few kickers on Tuesday to workout and find their third kicker on the season.
Fantasy Impact
Whoever wins the job should be on the fantasy radar with the Lions having a pretty good offense and playing home games in a dome. Keep an eye out for the winner.
After just three weeks, the Detroit Lions' cut ties with rookie kicker Nate Freese, replacing him with free agent Alex Henery.
Fantasy Impact
Henery was a former fourth-round pick of the Eagles in 2011. He kicked in Philadelphia for three season and has a career 86 percent field goal percentage (74 of 86). He made 23 of 28 field goals last year, with a long of 51 yards. He should get plenty of opportunities with the Lions normally-explosive offense, so he's worth watching for a week or two before adding in any leagues.
The Lions have plans to sign Alex Henery today as their kicker and move on from struggling rookie Nate Freese.
Fantasy Impact
Freese has been pretty bad through three games and as a result didn't pop up on fantasy radars anywhere. Henery was solid for the Eagles as their kicker for three years and was surprisingly cut at the end of training camp this year in favor of rookie Cody Parkey. Henery made over 80% of his field goals in all three of his seasons with Philadelphia and will now be kicking in a dome for a high powered offense. If you are struggling at kicker in your league, Henery should be worth a look.
“All options are available,†special teams coordinator Dave Fipp said. “We’ll look at everybody, and we’ll continue to watch Al. The biggest thing is we hope to get Al a bunch of work in these next two games, and we’ll find out.†The issue with Henery is distance. Henery was 7 of 11 on kicks between 40 and 49 yards last season after going 15 of 16 from that distance in his first two years with the Eagles. Even though Henery has had a “really good camp,†Fipp said Henery is ultimately graded by performance in games.
Fantasy Impact
Last week Alex Henery missed a 47 yard field goal against the New England Patriots. Tonight, he missed a 31 yard field goal against the Pittsburgh Steelers. His job may be in serious jeopardy.
