Sean Newcomb signs one-year deal with White Sox

Sean Newcomb has signed a one-year deal, reportedly worth $4.5 million, with the Chicago White Sox. In a corresponding move, the White Sox designated LHP Ryan Rolison for assignment.

The White Sox rebuild continues with the signing of Newcomb, just two days after picking up Munetaka Murakami. Arguably the best left-handed reliever remaining on the market, Newcomb is coming off his best season at the big league level as he posted a 2.73 ERA with 91 strikeouts in 92.1 innings of work between the Red Sox and the Athletics. After leaving Boston, he had a 1.75 ERA with the A's, limiting opponents to a .214 batting average over 51.1 innings. Newcomb, who can also start, provides the White Sox with a veteran presence within their young pitching staff and will more than likely be used later in games. He could also be a sneaky source of saves for a White Sox team looking to take over the closer's role. Last season, Chicago had just 25 saves spread out over eight different pitchers.
