Yordano Ventura has passed away in his native Dominican Republic after a car crash. Early reports indicate he was driving in thick fog when he veered off the road. His car flipped, he was not wearing a seatbelt, and he was thrown from the vehicle. The hard-throwing right-hander was just 25 years old.
Fantasy Impact
Ventura was a joy to watch with his enthusiasm on the mound. The Royals and the entire baseball community will mourn his loss.
Yordano Ventura held the Marlins scoreless over six innings on Tuesday, allowing six hits and one walk with six strikeouts.
Fantasy Impact
It was the fourth consecutive quality start for Ventura, and the third time in four appearances that he's gone at least six innings while allowing one earned run or less. He's also showing more strikeout upside of late, totaling 22 Ks over his last three appearances spanning 19 1/3 innings.
Yordano Ventura exited Sunday's start after rolling his ankle. The extent of the injury isn't clear at this point.
Fantasy Impact
While there was hope that Ventura would put it all together in 2016, that hasn't been the case. He's struggled to a 5.26 and 1.45 ERA and WHIP, and he hasn't even been able to provide strikeout upside with well under a K per inning on the season.
Yordano Ventura has a 2-0 record with a 2.35 ERA and .179 opponent's batting average in 2016, striking out 21 batters in 23 innings for the Royals. He has allowed five hits or fewer in three of his four starts and has only given up one home run. He will face the Mariners tomorrow.
Fantasy Impact
Even though Ventura has been great in 2016 for fantasy purposes, everything says that he will regress. His .226 BABIP is considerably lower than his career .316, his walk rate is at an absurd 5.48 per nine, and batters are actually hitting the ball harder against him in 2016 (33.3%) than his career average (27.4%). Everything screams "sell-high" for Ventura, especially since you can sell him with the expectation of wins on a good Royals team. Ventura has faced off with current Mariners in 57 at-bats and the team has a .175 batting average off of the Dominican, even though Ketel Marte is 3-for-3 with a triple off of the 24-year-old.
Ventura lasted just five innings, as he walked six batters in this game. He did allow two runs on just two hits. Ventura was able to strikeout six which was encouraging, but the lack of command with the walks is the bigger story
Fantasy Impact
If you owned Yordano Ventura, the results weren't what you expected. The walks in this game really killed his WHIP potential. It also didn't help that he didn't get the win. Hopefully, he will be able to limit his walks in his next matchup against the Houston Astros.
