Jenkins got tagged pretty well tonight, allowing eight hits and nine runs (all earned) over 3 1/3 innings. He also walked two, struck out three and allowed three home runs. The Braves went on to lose the game, 11-9. The loss gives Jenkins a 2-4 record on the year while the Braves fell to 44-79. After the game, Jenkins was optioned to Triple-A Gwinnett.
Fantasy Impact
Earlier this season, the organization projected Jenkins as a reliever, but was called to join the rotation after injuries and trades decimated the team's starting pitching. The team would be wise to put the brakes on their reliance of him starting any more games. Not much here for fantasy owners, now or in the future.
Earlier this year, the team's staff decided that Jenkins was best suited as a reliever and started the process of grooming him for that role when he reached the majors. In the meantime, the Braves' starting rotation suffered some losses and Jenkins was recast as a starter. That has been a huge mistake as he now owns a 6.17 ERA to go with a 1.89 WHIP. Today, he allowed eight hits and seven runs (all earned) while walking five and striking out two in 3 1/3 innings. He also allowed three home runs. With the 7-2 loss, Jenkins record stands at 0-2 while the team fell to 33-66.
Fantasy Impact
It would not be a surprise to see Jenkins sent to the bullpen as his starts have just not shown much promise, even for a young kid. He has talent but the team was correct to see him as a better bullpen pitcher than a starter. Scouts have long projected that role for him and hopefully, the team will move in that direction. He has no fantasy value currently but long-term he has value in a relief role. chewing up innings.
Yes, the Braves still lost the game after Arodys Vizcaino blew a save opportunity but Jenkins fared well in the 4 2/3 innings he pitched. He allowed four hits and one run (earned) while walking two and striking out three. With the team's rotation in disarray, he may become a fixture there even though he projects as a solid reliever.
Fantasy Impact
Jenkins has a terrific future with the Braves but they recently projected him as a reliever, not a starter. That said, he will likely see more spot starts until the team can stabilize a rotation that has been hit with injuries and ineffectiveness.
Braves RHP prospect Tyrell Jenkins pitched seven innings, giving up seven hits, zero earned runs, and six strikeouts for Triple-A Gwinnett on Thursday afternoon.
Fantasy Impact
Jenkins came over from the Cardinals in the Jason Hayward-Shelby Miller deal and was spectacular Thursday. A three-sport star in high school, he possesses a plus fastball to go with his 6"4 frame. Health has been an issue as he hasn't thrown 100 innings in a year as a professional but could take off if he's able to stay healthy for a full season. He is currently ranked tenth on the Braves prospects list and could see action during late September callups.
