Shae Simmons worked around one hit to pitch a scoreless ninth inning in Seattle's 10-2 win over Oakland. He also struck out two in the non-save situation.
Fantasy Impact
Simmons, who had been battling a forearm injury since pitching in a March 11 spring-training game, finally made his Mariners' debut. The 27-year-old right-hander was forced to miss the entire 2015 season after undergoing Tommy John surgery while a member of the Braves' organization. He pitched well in the seven appearances with Atlanta in 2016, posting a 1.35 ERA and 0.90 WHIP, albeit over only 6 2/3 innings of work. Simmons was the 40th pitcher used by Seattle this year, tying a Major-League record held by the Rangers in 2014.
Shae Simmons was activated from the 60-day disabled list on Friday and recalled from a rehab assignment at Triple-A Tacoma.
Fantasy Impact
Simmons missed all of 2015 and most of 2016 recovering from Tommy John surgery. He last appeared in the Majors in 2016, pitching in relief while a member of the Atlanta Braves. The 26-year-old right-hander opened the season with Seattle on the disabled list because of a strained right elbow. He made 13 rehab appearances over the last two months with three different minor-league clubs. It is likely that Simmons will be used in middle relief for the rest of September.
Simmons posted good numbers during his rookie season last year, with a 2.91 ERA, along with a 23/11 K/BB over 21 2/3 innings. The Braves were hoping he would compete for the setup role this year, but when his elbow started barking 10 days ago, they picked up a couple more relievers.
Fantasy Impact
The Braves will be lacking any success this year, but those looking for something in the way of RP off the team, are looking at Kimbrel, with Grilli or Veras in the setup role.
