The Blue Jays have released streaky OF Melvin Upton, Jr.
Fantasy Impact
Upton was acquired at the trade deadline in 2016 and was an immediate disappointment. He still has fantasy value if he matches what he did at the beginning of the year with San Diego, but if he play like he did in Toronto, wherever he ends up, he is not worth a look in any fantasy format.
Getting a pinch-hit opportunity late in Saturday night's game, Melvin Upton delivered on a sacrifice fly for the Jays' only run and his 61st RBI of the season.
Fantasy Impact
Upton Jr. has been mediocre at best since his trade to the Jays, and is hitting just .167 (5-for-3) with one HR and four RBI in his last 15 games.
Melvin Upton had a solid game for the Blue Jays on Thursday, going 3-for-4 with a stolen base and two runs scored.
Fantasy Impact
While he doesn't get on base much, Upton enhances his own value with his speed. He is now 4-for-6 on stolen base attempts since joining the Blue Jays at the deadline and has 24 stolen bases this season.
Melvin Upton, Jr. had his first big game as a Blue Jay on Wednesday, taking a CC Sabathia pitch deep to RF for a three-run home run, his first as a Blue Jay and his 17th of the season.
Fantasy Impact
Seventeen is Upton's most since his career-best 28 in 2012. Upton has struggled mightily as a Blue Jay, but Wednesday was a sign of his potential as he went 2-for-3, part of a 4-for-10 series in the Bronx.
Melvin Upton Jr. will see more regular playing time with the Blue Jays in place of the injured Kevin Pillar.
Fantasy Impact
Upton's fantasy value took a hit following the trade to the Blue Jays despite the fact that he went to a more favorable park for hitters and a better lineup. Now, with the injury to Pillar, Upton will receive more playing time. It will be interesting to see what he does with the opportunity and where the Blue Jays list him in the order moving forward.
