The Mets signed OF Mallex Smith to a minor league contract with an invitation to spring training.
Fantasy Impact
The speedster had a dreadful season for the Mariners this past summer and was removed from their 40-man roster at the end of the year. He'll be fantasy relevant if given enough at-bats, if only due to his stolen base abilities, but he likely won't see the field all that much.
Mallex Smith elected to become a free agent after being outrighted off the Mariners 40-man roster back in early September.
Fantasy Impact
Smith led all of baseball with 46 steals back in 2019 but only appeared in 14 games in 2020, registering a .133/.170/.178 batting line before being designated for assignment. His speed will get him an opportunity with another club next spring.
The Mariners sent OF Mallex Smith outright to their alternate training site.
Fantasy Impact
Smith led baseball with 46 steals in 2019 but is now off the Mariners' 40-man roster. He's a non-tender candidate this offseason.
OF Mallex Smith was optioned to the Mariners’ alternate training site Tuesday.
Fantasy Impact
Smith has struggled most of this season, slashing .133/.170/.178 across 14 contests. He is an intriguing fantasy option mainly due to his speed. Smith has swiped 86 bags the last two seasons and is worth only hanging onto in deep-league formats despite the demotion.
Mallex Smith went 0-for-4 in the Mariners 7-6 win over the Los Angeles Angels on Wednesday
Fantasy Impact
Smith has been unable to get it going in the early part of the season, recording just two hits through his first 27 at-bats. Such struggles have limited his greatest feature of speed, holding him to just one stolen base attempt through nine games. Smith remains one of the top stolen base threats in the league but it's better to keep him on the bench until he starts getting on base again.
