Kirk Nieuwenhuis was recalled to the major leagues Saturday to take the roster spot of Wily Peralta. He went 1-for-1 with a pinch hit single.
Fantasy Impact
Nieuwenhuis will serve a minor bench role for the Crew and has no fantasy value. He offers a veteran option in CF for the Brewers' alongside top prospect Lewis Brinson.
Kirk Nieuwenhuis, who entered the game in the second inning for Keon Broxton after he was forced to leave the game when he was struck in the face with a pitch, smacked a solo homer in the seventh inning to give the Brewers a 1-0 lead. The Brewers went on to lose 2-1, while Nieuwenhuis finished the game 1-for-3 with the solo homer and two strikeouts.
Fantasy Impact
Broxton is not expected to land on the DL but could miss a game or two. If Broxton does miss any time, Nieuwenhuis is a candidate to start in CF, although the Brewers will face a lefty on Friday so they may choose to go with a right-handed bat. Nieuwenhuis is not worth fantasy consideration.
Nieuwenhuis went 2-for-4 in the Brewers' 8-5 win over the Phillies. He was able to single and double with two RBI and a steal in the win.
Fantasy Impact
He has only 25 at-bats this season, batting .240 with a home run and seven RBI. Perhaps his performance on Sunday will earn him some more starts in center field as the Brewers continue to search for stability at that position.
Nieuwenhuis went 1-for-4 with a home run in the Brewers' 6-4 loss to Houston.
Fantasy Impact
Nieuwenhuis got the start in center field and likely will be part of a rotation for the Brewers this season. He now has 18 career home runs in his seventh big league season so don't expect too much production out of him, even if he were to get regular playing time.
Brewers manager Craig Counsell does not expect the centerfield battle to be settled by Opening Day and states that multiple players will get an opportunity.
Fantasy Impact
Nieuwenhuis is one of the options along with Keon Broxton and Eric Young Jr. Nieuwenhuis is batting just .231 this spring with one home run and four runs batted in. The fact that he has some big league experience and bats left-handed will likely put him in the starting lineup some days particularly against righties.
