The Braves re-signed Josh Collmenter today to a 1-year contract for $1.2M with additional incentives of another $1.2M. This was done in an effort to avoid arbitration. Collmenter will compete for a back-of-rotation starter or help the team as a reliever, as he has experience in either role.
Fantasy Impact
The Braves got Collmenter from the Cubs in September for cash when they needed help with some starts and he did a commendable job, offering a 2.37 ERA over three starts in which he posted a record of 2-0. If he does well in the spring he may be worth a look in deeper formats as a back-end starter.
Collmenter has had three good starts with the Braves since joining the team and his ERA for those starts stands at 2.37. Tonight, he allowed six hits and one run (earned) while walking none and striking out four. Collmenter's record is now 3-0 with the Braves, whose record is now 66-92.
Fantasy Impact
Prior to the trade that sent him to the Braves, Collmenter was a reliever with the Diamondbacks and he was struggling in that role. This resurgence delights the Braves as it increases his trade value for the offseason.
After giving up four home runs in his last start, Josh Collmenter was moved to the bullpen and Allen Webster was recalled from Triple-A Reno to take his place and will start Saturday. Collmenter was 3-6 with a 5.24 ERA in 12 games started.
Fantasy Impact
Never a power pitcher, Collmenter's average fastball velocity this season is down to 84.4 MPH. His unique delivery and the corresponding movement have not been enough to compensate for the decreased velocity. He has always performed better in the bullpen, but even with some improvement it will not be enough to help fantasy squads. If he was on your very deep, NL-only team, it is time to cut your losses.
Josh Collmenter pitched six innings Sunday and gave up five runs on nine hits, including four long balls. He walked one and struck out one in the loss to the New York Mets.
Fantasy Impact
Collmenter (3-6) is not going to light up the box score with strikeouts or an impressive ERA (which is 5.24) but he could be an option to stream in his next start against the San Francisco Giants. The righty pitched his best game of the year against them in April, giving up only four hits in a complete game shutout.
Josh Collmenter allowed three earned runs on six hits in 5 2/3 innings against the Braves on Tuesday. He also struckout three in the outing.
Fantasy Impact
As sad as it is, this is about as good as Collmenter has been in a while, not walking a batter and almost making it through six. Collmenter hasn't had a quality start since April 29th against Colorado, and his ERA has been up over 5.00 for five starts. Don't use him unless necessary.
