Joe Wieland was thrust into the starting lineup Wednesday night after scheduled starter, Mat Latos, was scratched due to a stiff neck. Wieland allowed two earned runs, four hits, walked one, and struck out two in four innings of work. 43-of-72 pitches were thrown for strikes.
Fantasy Impact
Wieland doesn't have fantasy relevance, but his start shook up the Dodgers starting rotation schedule. Zack Greinke will pitch on Sunday and Clayton Kershaw will go Monday.
Joe Wieland got rocked in his 2015 debut by the Milwaukee Brewers. He gave up six hits (two home runs), six earned runs, four walks, and struck out two. 47-of-84 pitches were thrown for strikes.
Fantasy Impact
The four walks were a surprise as Wieland is known for his control. Getting pounded when he threw strikes probably contributed to that. His fastball resides at 90 mph and he threw a curveball. He will probably get sent back down to the minors.
Joe Wieland was told that he will start Wednesday, not on Thursday as previously reported.
Fantasy Impact
Worth the pickup. He has excellent control and has shown the ability to strikeout batters as evidenced by his 22 strikeouts so far in the minors.
Joe Wieland is with the team in Milwaukee and will start on Thursday.
Fantasy Impact
Wieland was a piece in the Matt Kemp trade. He underwent Tommy John surgery in 2012. His distinguishing characteristics are his mature approach and outstanding control. He throws from a three-quarters arm slot and possesses a low-90s fastball, curveball, and change-up. He's worth a pick up because of his pedigree, control, the fact Friedman traded for him, and the state of the Dodgers starting rotation due to injury.
Joe Wieland gave up nine total hits but none that were hit particularly hard Tuesday against the Chicago White Sox. He ended up surrending two earned runs but one of the runs was off a sacrifice fly after Heisey and Crawford misplayed a ball in the outfield allowing runners to advance to second and third. Wieland did not walk anyone and struck out one.
Fantasy Impact
Wieland was a piece in the Matt Kemp trade. He had Tommy John surgery in 2013 but looks to be back as his Spring Training numbers prior to today's game were: 9 IP, 9 Ks, 3 BB, 1.00 ERA, and 1.111 WHIP. Wieland is a candidate to fill in at the back of the Dodgers rotation until Hyun-Jin Ryu is ready. Wieland has excellent control and a low-to-mid 90s fastball, solid changeup, and good curveball.
