Major League Baseball has suspended Braves OF Hector Olivera without pay up through 8/1 for violating the league's joint domestic violence, sexual assault and child abuse policies.
Fantasy Impact
The suspension is retroactive to April 30 and lasts 82 games. Olivera will not appeal the suspension, which stems from an incident at the team hotel last month when Olivera was charged with misdemeanor assault and battery when a woman claimed she had been assaulted by him.
Hector Olivera was placed on administrative leave by the Braves today, after being arrested for assaulting a woman at the team hotel. He has a $10,000 jail bond and is expected to remain behind bars for the time being.
Fantasy Impact
Olivera has been starting most games for the Braves, and will probably see his at-bats taken by Kelly Johnson.
Braves 3B/OF Hector Olivera was arrested Wednesday for allegedly assaulting a woman at the team's hotel in Washington, D.C for their series against the Nationals. Major League Baseball placed Olivera on administrative leave. The Braves have recalled INF Daniel Castro from Triple-A Gwinnett.
Fantasy Impact
Olivera can be safely dropped if he hasn't already been even before this incident. This situation could be long and drawn out within the legal system and the youngster has also failed to perform on the field thus far. He was hitting .211 with one XBH and two RBI on the season.
Olivera went 2-for-4 including a double, two runs scored and a RBI on a sacrifice fly in the Braves' 12-7 loss to the Cardinals on Sunday afternoon.
Fantasy Impact
Olivera, playing left-field and batting fifth, raised his season average to .267, although he also grounded into a rally-killing double play in first. Olivera seems to be locked in as a regular in the outfield of this weak Braves offense. He has some appeal in deeper mixed leagues.
Olivera went 0-for-3 hitting sixth and played left field until he was replaced by Jeff Francoeur in the late innings. The Braves lost 4-3 in extra innings to the Nationals on Monday.
Fantasy Impact
Olivera had a torrid spring, hitting .411 in the Grapefruit League and securing a starting spot in the outfield. He should continue to get looks at third base as well, which could provide some added value once he becomes positionally eligible at both.
