Andrew Bailey announced his retirement from baseball today and will instead join the Los Angeles Angels in a non-playing position. He will be the Angels' instant replay coordinator and a coaching assistant this season, according to The Athletic's Pedro Moura.
Fantasy Impact
Once a dominant reliever in his early playing days with the Oakland Athletics, Bailey has been plagued by arm injuries in recent years and has ultimately decided to hang up his cleats at 33 years old.
RP Andrew Bailey tossed a clean eighth inning on Tuesday vs. the Athletics, with a flyout, lineout and groundout. He was credited with the win.
Fantasy Impact
The Angels intend to operate a "closer by committee" according to manager Mike Scioscia. Cam Bedrosian looks like the best option in their bullpen and he converted the first opportunity, taking over from Bailey in this game. Don't completely disregard Bailey. He was six out of six in save chances at the end of last season with the Angels.
RP Andrew Bailey gave up four earned runs in two-thirds of an inning against the Cubs in Monday's Cactus League game. He only allowed one hit but walked three.
Fantasy Impact
With Angels' closer Huston Street expected to start the season on the DL, there is an opportunity for saves. Cam Bedrosian is the expected replacement but he is dealing with health issues of his own. Andrew Bailey has 95 career saves and looked good in his brief stint with the Angels at the back end of last season, allowing three runs with two walks and eight strikeouts in 11 1/3 innings.
Bailey signed a one year contract for $1 million.
Fantasy Impact
The 32 year old was a bright spot in the Angel bullpen at the end of the 2016 season, nailing down six saves and posting a 2.38 ERA. While he is not expected to takeover the closer position he may have some value in leagues where points are awarded for holds.
Andrew Bailey registered his second save on Monday, providing another spotless inning of work.
Fantasy Impact
Bailey was recently inserted as the Angels' closer. Starting the season with the Phillies, the Angels recently signed Bailey to a minor league deal. Due to injuries and ineffectiveness, he's found his way back into a closer role. He will maintain the role if he's able to continue his hot start.
