Abreu last appeared in a big league game on Aug. 20 against the Toronto Blue Jays before right elbow inflammation forced him to a lengthy IL stint. In 32 appearances, Abreu pitched to a solid 3.32 ERA along with 38 strikeouts. In a corresponding move, the Yankees placed fellow reliever Ron Marinaccio on the 15-Day IL with a stress fracture in his right shin.

Abreu has appeared in 14 games this season, posting a 4.43 ERA and 1.16 WHIP with a 23:11 K:BB in 22 1/3 innings. The 25-year-old reliever will probably not see many more chances for a save as he is behind Chad Green and Zach Britton in the bullpen and regular closer Aroldis Chapman should be off the IL next week.
