Padres manager Mike Shildt said Wednesday that the team’s catching job remains an open competition, with Luis Campusano, Elias Díaz, Martín Maldonado, and Brett Sullivan all vying for playing time. While Díaz and Campusano are expected to be the primary options, Shildt did not name a favorite for the starting role.
Fantasy Impact:
Campusano offers the most offensive upside of the group, but defensive concerns and the fact that he still has a minor-league option could impact his playing time. If the Padres prioritize defense, Díaz could see more starts early in the season. Fantasy managers should monitor the competition in camp, as Campusano’s bat makes him the most intriguing option if he earns regular at-bats.
