Chargers sign Jeff Cumberland

The San Diego Chargers and TE Jeff Cumberland agreed to terms on a one-year deal on Monday.

Fantasy Impact

The San Diego Chargers lost TE Ladarius Green via free agency earlier in the offseason and replaced him with Jeff Cumberland on Monday. Cumberland only caught five passes for 77 yards over the course of 15 games with the Jets in 2015. He will likely compete for the TE2 position behind Antonio Gates with the Chargers.

Jeff Cumberland has quiet day

New York Jets tight end Jeff Cumberland had two catches for ten yards in the 24-17 loss to the Philadelphia Eagles on Sunday afternoon.

Fantasy Impact

There is little upside to Cumberland. He isn't much of a receiving threat, and should remain a free agent in all fantasy leagues and formats - despite him being at the top of the depth chart in New York.

Jeff Cumberland scores second touchdown of season

Jeff Cumberland scored his second touchdown of the season in the New York Jets' 17-16 loss to the New England Patriots on Sunday. The tight end also recorded 43 yards from three catches, including the score.

Fantasy Impact

Jeff Cumberland shouldn't be taking up a sport on any fantasy rosters, despite the tight end being extremely shallow. His Week 15 performance against New England appears to be an outlier, so don't rely on him for similar output next weekend.

Is Cumberland the Jets' No. 2 target?

In Sunday's win over the Oakland Raiders, Jeff Cumberland played 55 of the 70 offensive plays. In those plays, Cumberland was targeted 5 times and had 4 receptions for 50 yards. Cumberland was second on the team in yards and targets.

Fantasy Impact

It is clear for now that Jeff Cumberland is the starting TE for the Jets. Rookie Jace Amaro had only 21 plays compared to Cumberland's 55. Cumberland isn't a starter in most fantasy leagues, but is a decent backup in deeper leagues.

Cumberland didn't practice on Thurday

Jeff Cumberland didn't practice on Thursday, and he 'wasn't even spotted on the field.' This comes after he injured his Achilles in training camp on Wednesday, although it wasn't his surgically repaired one. Rex Ryan played down the injury, and expects Cumberland to play on Saturday night.

Fantasy Impact

It would be a surprise if Cumberland was even a half-decent fantasy player this season; but for those who own, or possibly draft him, this particular injury is worth keeping a close eye on. Cumberland has already had surgery to repair one of his Achilles, and has now injured the other one. There is a possibility that it could worsen over the season, although the Jets don't seem to think it's a major injury.
