EuroLeague cancels remainder of the 2019-20 season amidst COVID-19 pandemic

Europe’s top basketball league, the EuroLeague, made up of 18 teams across 10 European nations, has officially canceled the remainder of the 2019-20 season after exploring “every possible option” of ways to resume the season.

“Without a doubt, this is the most difficult decision we have had to take in our 20-year history,” Euroleague Basketball President and CEO Jordi Bertomeu said. “Due to reasons beyond our control, we have been forced to cut short the most successful and exciting season in European basketball history.” The EuroLeague is led by top-scorer Shane Larkin, former University of Miami star and NBA journeyman. While he didn’t quite stick in the NBA after a superb collegiate career at Miami, Larkin has found a home in the EuroLeague. He’s played the past two seasons with Anadolu Efes, and this season, he was averaging 22.2 points, 3.1 rebounds, 4.1 assists, and 1.3 steals per game prior to the league shutdown on March 12. Larkin seemed to agree with the decision made by the EuroLeague to cancel the season, saying in an Instagram post, “I don’t think the EuroLeague champions should be decided by who has the ability to train and who doesn’t.” The news of the cancelation comes just two days after the NBA made headlines regarding a possible resumption of play at Orlando’s Walt Disney World.
