Pat Fitzmaurice FantasyPros | Kyle Pitts was regarded as one of the best TE prospects to enter the league in years when the Falcons drafted him No. 4 overall in 2021. But after debuting with a 68-catch, 1,026-yard season as a rookie, Pitts has been considered a disappointment the last two seasons. Pitts played 10 games in 2022 before a torn MCL ended his season prematurely. He ranked TE18 in PPR fantasy scoring when he went down, with 28 catches for 356 yards and two touchdowns. Last season, Pitts had 53 catches for 667 yards and three touchdowns, finishing TE13 in PPR scoring. There are reasons to be optimistic that Pitts will rebound in 2024. Arthur Smith, notorious for not getting the ball into the hands of his best playmakers, was dismissed as Atlanta's head coach. Also, it's possible that Pitts was still bothered by the lingering effects of the knee injury, as we learned that he had also sustained PCL damage in addition to the MCL tear. The Falcons signed Kirk Cousins in the offseason, dramatically upgrading the QB position. Pitts has immense athletic talent and entered the league with a sterling college résumé. This might be a good time to buy in, with two dissatisfying seasons likely meaning a discounted price for Pitts in 2024 fantasy drafts.
Andrew Erickson FantasyPros | Deebo Samuel ranked as the WR12 overall despite playing 15 games. Notably, he scored the second-most total touchdowns (12) with his dual role as a rusher and receiver. Samuel also led all wide receivers in total red-zone touches. However, his injury history raises concerns due to his physical playing style. Additionally, there's potential for TD regression given his performance exceeded expectations in the previous season, ranking as WR26 in expected points per game (10.9). Moreover, relying on rushing production can be unpredictable year-to-year, and the emergence of Brandon Aiyuk further complicates Samuel's outlook as he enters a contract year. If Aiyuk is moved, hard to see Samuel going outside the top-2 rounds of fantasy drafts. And Samuel has reportedly been "the" guy at 49ers camp with Aiyuk not practicing.
Derek Brown FantasyPros | Last year, Samuel bounced back after a down year as the WR12 in fantasy points per game. His dynamic playmaking ability and lucrative red zone role (14th in red zone targets) led to 12 total touchdowns (fourth-most). Samuel was the 49ers' go-to weapon against two-high coverages while also flashing strong overall efficiency numbers. Samuel was 14th in yards per route run and 30th in first downs per route run (per Fantasy Points Data). Samuel could easily finish as a WR1 again in 2024, but he's probably better viewed as a WR2. | Pitts was railroaded yet again last year by Arthur Smith, as he played most of the season at less than 100%. Pitts finished as the TE16 in fantasy points per game and the TE15 in expected fantasy points per game. Much of this can be attributed to his minuscule touchdown production (only three, 18th among TEs) and a non-existent red zone role (34th in red zone targets). While Pitts lagged in YPRR and FD/RR (18th in both), he still flashed in one of the metrics I look to for projecting talent and ceiling at the tight end position, and that's YPRR vs. man coverage. Last year, Pitts ranked seventh in this metric, immediately behind Travis Kelce. With a revamped offensive system, a clean bill of health, and improved quarterback play, Pitts is set to soar this season. |
