Niners sign former Arizona RB Smith

Following a recent string of injuries to their running back core, the 49ers signed former Cardinals running back Alfonso Smith on Tuesday. Smith spent all four years of his NFL career in Arizona, finishing with 48 carries for 156 yards and 2 TD’s in 43 games (Yahoo!)
Fantasy Impact:
The signing comes as no surprise after losing Kendall Hunter for the season with a torn ACL, and LaMichael James sidelined indefinitely with a dislocated elbow. Smith’s signing is most likely insurance and is no lock to finish the preseason with the team. Even if he does, there will be no unseeding of Frank Gore as the starter in San Francisco, although he could compete with Hyde for backup duty if James' injury nags him longer than expected.
