Carlos Martinez (shoulder) told reporters he intends to serve as a starter this season when healthy. (Rick Hummel via St. Louis Post-Dispatch)
Fantasy Impact:
Martinez has been shut down for two weeks due to shoulder inflammation, so if he intends to start that would likely mean starting the season on the injured list. Injuries plagued him all last season, causing the Cardinals to eventually move Martinez to the bullpen, where he posted a 1.47 ERA, but also had an unsightly 5.4 BB/9 and 4.24 xFIP. The most important thing for Martinez, regardless of role, is to get fully healthy even if it means missing the first few weeks of the regular season. That being said, his fantasy stock is falling quickly thanks to this injury, and there is no way one could justify taking him as a top-150 player right now.
