Ryan Schimpf optioned to Triple-A

The Padres optioned Ryan Schimpf to Triple-A El Paso on Friday. The team recalled right-hander Jose Valdez from El Paso to take Schimpf's place on the roster. (San Diego Tribune)
Fantasy Impact:
This was certainly a surprise, as Schimpf had a team-leading 14 home runs this season, though it came with a major-league-low .158 batting average. Schimpf's hard-contact rate had dipped all the way down to 27% this year (from 40% last year), and it sounds like the Padres just want him to get regular at-bats in low-leverage situations. Expect Schimpf to return to the majors at some point soon, but he's not worth hanging onto at this point.
