Each week during the fantasy baseball season, I take a look at the relief pitcher landscape to aid with waiver wire and trade decisions. An injury to the league’s leader in holds last week opens up a high-leverage spot in Cleveland’s bullpen.

Fantasy Baseball Saves + Holds League Advice
Saves + Holds Leaders
There are 16 relievers with 12+ saves + holds through May 27th:
| Player | Team | SV+H |
| Cade Smith | CLE | 19 |
| Erik Sabrowski | CLE | 17 |
| Mason Miller | SDP | 16 |
| Bryan Baker | TBR | 15 |
| JoJo Romero | STL | 14 |
| Riley O’Brien | STL | 14 |
| Paul Sewald | ARI | 14 |
| Bryan Baker | TBR | 13 |
| Aroldis Chapman | BOS | 12 |
| Hogan Harris | ATH | 12 |
| Tony Santillan | CIN | 12 |
| David Bednar | NYY | 12 |
| Jason Adam | SDP | 12 |
| Lucas Erceg | KCR | 12 |
| Ian Seymour | TBR | 12 |
| Gregory Soto | PIT | 12 |
Takeaways
- Erik Sabrowski was placed on the injured list (IL) with an elbow injury. He has led the league in holds all season and leaves behind a role that has paid dividends for years in the Guardians’ bullpen.
- Hogan Harris has racked up the saves + holds for the Athletics, but has an ugly WHIP to go along with it. His ERA of 2.84 is great at first glance, until you see the 1.66 WHIP and 7.5 BB/9. Harris won’t be able to crack the top 40 with anything close to those numbers.
- Tony Santillan has struggled mightily in May, recording a 12.27 ERA, 2.18 WHIP, 7.4 K/9 and 4.9 BB/9. He’s given up an earned run in six of his nine appearances.

Biggest Risers
Hunter Gaddis (RP – CLE) | Unranked
Hunter Gaddis is the likeliest candidate to replace Eric Sabrowski as the set-up reliever for the Guardians. He pitched in the role last season and proved to be very valuable with 38 saves + holds, a 3.11 ERA and 1.19 WHIP. He was even better in 2024 with a 1.57 ERA and 0.76 WHIP, racking up another 33 saves + holds that season.
Gaddis’ strikeout rate is down from the previous two seasons, but he’s getting whiffs at an excellent rate (34%). The role is so good here that even if it doesn’t pick up, he should be worth it.
Jeff Hoffman (RP – TOR) | Unranked
Jeff Hoffman has been better of late, picking up two saves and a hold in his last four appearances spanning 3.2 innings. He only allowed one hit during that span, and he added six more strikeouts to his already elite strikeout rate.
No matter how well he finishes the season, Hoffman’s surface-level stats are likely to look bad. Even still, I expect him to pitch closer to his 2.73 xERA, 2.60 FIP or 1.94 xFIP the rest of the way.
Biggest Fallers
Juan Morillo (RP – ARI) | -16
Juan Morillo pitched well to start the season, but hasn’t picked up a save or hold since April. He still has good ratios (2.91 ERA, 1.02 WHIP), but other relievers in the Diamondbacks’ bullpen have pitched better recently.
Taylor Clarke has pitched the most innings and has stellar numbers. His 1.99 ERA and 0.71 WHIP are elite despite the lack of strikeouts (4.0 K/9).
Daniel Palencia (RP – CHC) | -1
Daniel Palencia was ranked 40th last week; however, he no longer deserves it. The Cubs are still ranked last in holds with 11, and their 10 saves aren’t much better, ranking third-worst.
Palencia has a solid ERA of 2.53, but his 1.41 WHIP isn’t going to cut it with so few saves or holds. The Cubs join the Rockies, Angels, Twins and Nationals as the only teams without a reliever in the top 40.
