Tuesday’s Starting Pitcher Rankings
Logan Gilbert (SEA) vs. DET
Logan Gilbert allowed only one run on two hits, zero walks and eight strikeouts in seven innings on Opening Day against the Athletics. It was an ideal follow-up to a sensational 2024 campaign. According to FanGraphs, Gilbert had the following stats in 33 starts spanning 208.2 innings last season.
- 12 wins
- 22 quality starts
- 3.14 xERA
- 3.11 xFIP
- 3.19 SIERA
- 0.89 WHIP
- 4.6 BB%
- 27.4 K%
- 14.9 SwStr%
- 30.1 CSW%
- 100 stuff+
- 107 location+
- 111 pitching+
Gilbert and the Mariners are -172 favorites against the lowly Tigers, and the game’s total is a pitcher-friendly 6.5 runs. Kerry Carpenter and Riley Greene are Detroit’s only above-average hitters against righties. The other seven hitters projected to start for them have had under a 100 wRC+ against righties since 2023 or debuting. They also have many high-strikeout hitters to inflate Gilbert’s floor and ceiling. Thus, Gilbert is far and away the top pitcher in all game types on tonight’s DFS slate.
Logan Webb (SF) at HOU
Logan Webb’s excellence at home isn’t a secret in the DFS community. He’s not a slouch on the road, either. San Francisco’s ace has been a bit unlucky in road venues, though. In 36 road starts spanning 212.1 innings since 2023, Webb has had a 4.24 ERA, 3.32 xFIP, 1.31 WHIP, 55.4 GB%, 6.0 BB% and 21.6 K%. Even splitting the difference between his ERA and xFIP would make Webb an intriguing DFS pick at his salary.
The righty’s matchup and betting info are mixed tonight. The Astros have a top-heavy lineup. Webb can put together a DFS-friendly start if he successfully navigates the top of Houston’s lineup. He can also pile up innings since Houston’s projected starters have only a few patient hitters and many low-strikeout batters, which could result in Webb working deep. Finally, the Giants are -116, but the game’s over/under is 8.5 runs.
Shane Baz (TB) vs. PIT
Shane Baz missed the entire 2023 season after undergoing Tommy John surgery at the end of September 2022. He successfully returned to make 14 starts last year for the Rays.
Baz’s 3.06 ERA outkicked his 3.62 xERA, 4.39 xFIP and 4.33 SIERA. Nevertheless, his xERA was rock-solid, and his pitch modeling was average. Baz was lights out in the upper minors and teased his potential before undergoing Tommy John surgery. He might not recapture that form, but Baz has a favorable matchup tonight, even if he’s the pitcher we saw in 2024. Bryan Reynolds (121 wRC+) is the only projected starter for the Pirates with a wRC+ above 120 against righties since 2023 or debuting, and many have a wRC+ below 100. As a result, Baz is primarily a matchup-driven DFS pick.
Suggested Lineup Stacks
- Home (PETCO Park)
- Game Total/Moneyline: 7.5 Runs/SD -168
The Padres are a top-heavy stack. Still, the top of San Diego’s lineup is tantalizing to stack against Logan Allen. Cleveland’s lefty coughed up a .377 OBP, .574 SLG and .403 wOBA to 359 righties.
- Home (T-Mobile Park)
- Game Total/Moneyline: 6.5 Runs/SEA -172
In 22 appearances (20 starts) last year, Casey Mize had a 4.49 ERA, 4.74 xERA, 4.04 xFIP, 4.33 SIERA, 1.47 WHIP and 17.3 K%. The righty also ceded a .324 wOBA to lefties and a .346 wOBA to righties in 2024. Therefore, Seattle’s lefties and righties are stacking options. The Mariners can punish a below-average starting pitcher. As a bonus, Seattle’s hitters have low salaries.
Core Studs
- In 268 plate appearances against lefties since 2023, Fernando Tatis has hit nine homers with a .377 OBP, .170 ISO and 133 wRC+.
- Cal Raleigh is nestled in the heart of Seattle’s lineup, slotting third. Since 2023, he’s had a .324 OBP, .218 ISO and 121 wRC+ against righties.
- Manny Machado has smashed 14 homers with a .360 OBP, .210 ISO and 136 wRC+ in 300 plate appearances against lefties since 2023.
Value Plays/Punts
- Nathaniel Lowe is a more appealing pick at DraftKings than FanDuel. Since 2023, he’s had a .369 OBP, .165 ISO and 128 wRC+ against righties.
- Heliot Ramos is quickly working to validate his breakout 2024 season. In 17 plate appearances and four games this year, Ramos has two homers, four runs, four RBIs, one stolen base, a .294 OBP, .471 ISO and 199 wRC+.
- Mize coughed up 11 stolen bases in 22 appearances (20 starts) last year. Ryan Bliss can burn up the bases if he’s in the lineup and reaches base. Bliss has stolen two bases this year and swiped 50 in Triple-A last season. Jose Iglesias is an appealing pivot if the Padres start him tonight.
Tuesday’s Top 3 Sleeper and Underdog Player Props
Check out our best picks on the MLB Underdog Cheat Sheet
Logan Webb: 17.5 Pitching Outs – More (Sleeper) (1.42x)
Logan Webb: 17.5 Pitching Outs – Higher (Underdog) (0.8x)
Webb didn’t have his cleanest start on Opening Day, recording only 15 outs. Still, he’s an innings eater. In 34 starts since last season, Webb has recorded at least 18 outs 24 times. So, he’s recorded at least 18 outs in 70.6% of his last 24 starts. We project Webb to pitch 6.15 innings tonight, putting him over his lines for outs recorded at Sleeper and Underdog.
Fernando Tatis: 8.5 Fantasy Points – Higher (Underdog)
Tatis should jump on Allen right out of the gate. In addition to Tatis’s excellence against lefties, he’s off to a fast start this season. In 22 plate appearances this year, Tatis has hit one homer with five runs, three RBIs, three stolen bases, a .500 OBP, .200 ISO and 222 wRC+.
Manny Machado: 6.5 Fantasy Points – Higher (Underdog)
Machado should also take advantage of Allen’s inability to tame right-handed batters. Again, Cleveland’s lefty surrendered a .377 OBP, .574 slugging and .403 wOBA to 359 right-handed batters last year. Like Tatis, Machado has a track record of dominance against lefties and came out hot this season. In 19 plate appearances this year, Machado has a .368 OBP, .167 ISO, 120 wRC+, three runs, two RBIs and three stolen bases.
