Must-Have Fantasy Baseball Draft Targets
Let’s take a look at who the experts are targeting in all of their fantasy baseball drafts!
Sandy Alcantara (SP – MIA)
Sandy Alcantara missed all of 2024 recovering from Tommy John surgery, but he has already been named Miami’s Opening Day starter. Alcantara’s biggest strengths prior to injury were his ratio protection. He has a career ERA of 3.32 and a WHIP of 1.16. His strikeout rate is average (21.4%), but his walk rate is an above-average 7.4%. Whether this will continue post-TJ is a question, as pitchers often increase velocity but struggle with command upon return. The good news is that Alcantara is currently going at an ADP of 152, making the cost more bearable given the potential risks. However, if everything hits on all cylinders, he could return to SP2 status in a hurry.

Luis Garcia (2B – WSH)
Jose Altuve is projected as a top-40 player – 20 home runs, a .270 batting average and 17 stolen bases – at the age of 34. In 2024, Luis Garcia hit 18 home runs, recorded a .282 batting average and stole 22 bases. He’s 10 years younger than Altuve and being drafted nearly 100 picks later.
It’s hard to say no to that value, especially with the Nationals’ lineup featuring James Wood and Dylan Crews for an entire season in 2025. In a position littered with questions, my answer continues to be Garcia, at cost, whenever I can draft him.

Matt Chapman (3B – SF)
Matt Chapman is coming off what would probably be considered a career season in a contract year, so I understand not betting on a repeat. However, he has had a 110 or better wRC+ in seven of his eight seasons. The Giants have improved their team this offseason by adding Willy Adames and Jung Hoo Lee will be healthy. Plus Tyler Fitzgerald and Heliot Ramos are locked in for full-time roles, while Bryce Eldridge might debut at some point. The lineup should be improved around him, so there is an expectation of a similar season to last year with fewer steals.

Marcus Semien (2B – TEX)
In football, defense wins championships. In fantasy baseball, volume wins championships. Marcus Semien has missed four games over the last four seasons. That extends to seven games missed since 2018 if you don’t include the 2020 shortened season.
Semien had a down year last season, but many Rangers struggled with a World Series hangover. I expect Semien and most of his teammates to rebound.

Jordan Westburg (2B/3B – BAL)
Somehow, Baltimore continues to churn out talented infielders. Jordan Westburg is a former 30th-overall pick who broke out last season but only played 107 games due to a fractured right hand in late July. Among second basemen with at least 400 plate appearances, Westburg was fourth in per-game value, yet, he carries an ADP of 107 as the sixth second baseman off the board.
Westburg was third among qualified third basemen and second among qualified second basemen in xwOBA last season, but he underperformed the stat by several points. He now has the benefit of playing in a home park moving in the left-field walls. A majority of Westburg’s power derives from the pull side and he could take advantage of the renovations as the 2025 season progresses.

Brenton Doyle (OF – COL)
Brenton Doyle is more appealing in leagues with daily lineup changes than those with weekly lineup changes. Nevertheless, he was the 28th-ranked hitter in a breakout 2024 campaign, making the most of playing home games at Coors Field. Doyle’s home ballpark is still by far MLB’s most hitter-friendly venue.
Circling back to Doyle’s 2024 production, from 2023 to 2024, he whittled his strikeout rate from 35.0% to 25.4%, and his batting average surged from .203 to .260. Colorado’s centerfielder had a balance of power and speed, swatting 23 homers and stealing 30 bases in 149 games and 603 plate appearances in 2024.
Doyle hit all over the lineup last year, but 226 of his plate appearances were fifth or lower in the lineup. He’s tabbed to hit atop the order this year, maximizing his potential for plate appearances and runs.
