News & Notes
Orioles manager Brandon Hyde told reporters earlier in the week he did not know if Felix Bautista would break with the team out of camp as he works his way back from Tommy John surgery. He has made a handful of appearances in spring training for Baltimore, but the Orioles may still hold him back at the start of the season. This could lower his value a tad bit to start, but he’ll remain one of the top closers in fantasy baseball when healthy.
Tanner Scott logged his first save of the season in the Tokyo Series against the Cubs. It sounds like he will be the 1A for saves in the Dodgers’ bullpen, but it’s possible it could also be a committee at times. Scott would be ranked much higher on here if he was the full-time closer.
While David Bednar should open the season as the Pirates’ closer, manager Derek Shelton has still been non-committal when asked about the situation. It was a disastrous season last year for Bednar after dealing with an injury at the beginning of the season. He’ll look to bounce back this year, but it is worth noting his leash as the primary closer might be short.
The Red Sox closer situation is up in the air between Aroldis Chapman and Liam Hendriks. Chapman will likely open the season in the closer role, but Hendriks will be in the mix as well.
Diamondbacks manager Torey Lovullo said earlier this week that he won’t name a closer before the start of the regular season. Justin Martinez is considered the favorite for the job, but we’ll have to see him earn it before moving him up the closer report rankings.
