With Super Bowl LIX in the books, the NFL heads into the offseason. While fans will surely miss the riveting action on Sunday afternoons, the offseason brings its fair share of excitement as well. In particular, free agency is an extremely engaging period for fantasy football managers. This, along with the NFL Draft, will cause a drastic shift in how depth charts and volume distributions are viewed between now and the beginning of next season.
I’ll highlight the NFL Free Agency landing spots that offer the ideal blend of volume upside and offensive prowess for the biggest names in this year’s free agency class.

Ideal NFL Free Agency Landing Spots
As always, the fantasy football community hopes star free agents land in systems that will be conducive to consistent production. For the most part, we want these players to slot into thin depth charts where their competition for volume will be minimal. Another important factor to consider is the offensive ecosystem. As talented as some of these players are, they may not be able to overcome an ineffective offensive scheme.
Calvin Ridley‘s 2024 season is an interesting case study. The veteran wide receiver’s talent is undeniable and he seemed primed to receive an elite target share as the only wideout of note in Tennessee. That said, Ridley was unable to overcome the continued struggles of the Titans’ offense. Despite earning a respectable 113 targets, he averaged an uninspiring 9.8 half-PPR fantasy points per game.
Chris Godwin (WR)
Before suffering a devastating ankle injury in Week 7, Chris Godwin was delivering some of the best performances of his career. According to Pro Football Focus (PFF), he was on pace to set career highs in both yards per route run and yards after the catch per reception. His 85.7 receiving grade was the second-best tally of his eight-year NFL career. The veteran remains one of the league’s most electric slot threats and will be a great contributor for whichever team earns his signature this spring.

Given the undeniable promise quarterback Jayden Daniels showed throughout his rookie season, the Washington Commanders have quickly become an attractive landing spot for pending free agents. Daniels excelled in Kliff Kingsbury’s system, where he and Terry McLaurin formed a formidable connection. The latter accumulated an impressive 1,096 receiving yards and 13 touchdowns in 2024. That said, no other receivers on the depth chart surpassed 506 receiving yards. The team can use some depth at the wide receiver position.
Godwin’s short-area effectiveness would perfectly complement McLaurin’s field-stretching ability. Their respective average depth of target (aDOT) metrics — 5.6 yards for Godwin and 13.9 yards for McLaurin, per PFF — highlight the stark contrast in their usage.
Godwin would likely soak up a large portion of Zach Ertz‘s volume closer to the line of scrimmage. While the savvy veteran was a reliable option for Daniels, his efficiency left much to be desired. According to PFF, he averaged 3.0 yards after catch per reception and 1.30 yards per route run. Godwin would be a sizeable upgrade to Ertz’s lacklustre production.
Godwin’s addition to this offense would ensure he maintains the elite level of volume that has made him a fantasy football darling throughout his career. It would also be a sizeable boost for the entire Washington offense.
Ideal Landing Spot: Commanders
Sam Darnold (QB)
Sam Darnold resurrected his career during his one-year stint as a Minnesota Viking. Once deemed a “bust” primed to serve as a backup quarterback for the rest of his career, Darnold surprised many by putting together an impressive campaign in 2024. He compiled an excess of 4,300 yards and 35 touchdowns as he led the Vikings to an eye-popping 14-3 record. Among signal-callers with at least 100 dropbacks, he ranked sixth in yards per attempt and eighth in big-time throw percentage, per PFF.
The Vikings have expressed their desire to proceed with J.J. McCarthy as their starting quarterback. Darnold will look to build off the momentum from his stellar 2024 season elsewhere. I’d argue the New York Jets would be a great destination for the journeyman.
It’s important to preface that Darnold may not be interested in a reunion with the Jets. After being drafted by New York in 2018, Darnold struggled to get acclimated to the NFL. The team moved on from him a mere three years later.
That said, if the veteran quarterback is willing to put these issues behind him, this move could be very beneficial for his personal career and fantasy football alike. The Jets boast an interesting group of weapons, headlined by the likes of Garrett Wilson and Breece Hall.
Despite the continuous struggles at the quarterback position in New York, Wilson has now eclipsed 1,000 receiving yards in three consecutive seasons. Hall is an explosive backfield weapon whose career average of 3.37 yards after contact per carry, per PFF, speaks volumes about his effectiveness as a runner. These two have historically been held back by the sub-par quarterback play in New York.
Darnold’s potential move to the Jets would preserve his value as a lower-end QB1 in fantasy. It may also propel Wilson and Hall to their full fantasy football potential.
Ideal Landing Spot: Jets
Aaron Jones (RB)
Like Sam Darnold, running back Aaron Jones is another veteran who enjoyed a career year in Minnesota. According to PFF, Jones set career highs in carries, rushing yards and yards after contact. He emerged as a focal point of Kevin O’Connell’s system that scored an average of 25.4 points per game last season.
What made Aaron Jones such a valuable fantasy football asset was his volume. Throughout his tenure in Green Bay, Jones was rarely used as a workhorse back. Whether it was Jamaal Williams or AJ Dillon, the team was insistent on having another featured running back to limit Jones’ usage. While this was likely done in an attempt to preserve Jones’ health, it certainly limited his fantasy football upside.
This wasn’t the case in Minnesota. The Vikings immediately allocated the lion’s share of carries to their star rusher. Jones’ 255 carries were, by a sizeable margin, the most on the depth chart. Cam Akers‘ 64 attempts were the next highest tally. Jones also earned a considerable role through the air. His 51 receptions were the third-most on the roster.
Aaron Jones is still an OC's dream
– Refuses to take negative plays
– Finds yards out of nothing
– Good with contact balance

The workhorse running back role has become increasingly rare over the years. In Minnesota, Jones figures to earn elite usage only rivaled by the best at the position. With this in mind, his ideal free agency outcome would be a return to the Vikings. He’ll join the likes of Justin Jefferson, Jordan Addison and T.J. Hockenson to form one of the more exciting offensive systems in the NFL. Running lanes and touchdown opportunities will not be hard to come by in this ecosystem.
