2025 NFL Draft Scouting Report: Trey Amos
Trey Amos (CB – Mississippi)
6-foot-1 | 190 Pounds
Background
Trey Amos originally attended Louisiana-Lafayette, where he spent the first three seasons of his collegiate career. Rotated in for 239 snaps as a freshman, finishing with 10 tackles and a pick. Started one game the following year, playing more heavily (437 snaps) and finished with 14 tackles and five breakups.
Amos took over a starting role the following year, finishing with 35 tackles and eight breakups before transferring to Alabama. Had 12 tackles and five breakups there before moving to Mississippi, where he posted his best year: 50 tackles, three interceptions and 13 breakups.
Positives
A tall, lanky boundary cornerback with extensive experience between three programs, showing a favorable development trajectory. Amos is a confident player with some swagger to his game. Plays a lot of press-man coverage, showing good patience to match releases at the line and using his length well to disrupt timing. Playing on the short side of the field, does a nice job of squeezing opponents into the boundary.
Very flexible athlete with quick feet and the top-end speed to carry receivers down the sidelines stride for stride. Amos uses his hands well to feel routes developing and stay connected; anticipation/route-recognition skills are also a plus. Gets his head around quickly to locate when his back is to the ball. Length and flexibility allow him to make a lot of plays on the ball when in-phase.
Also plays some shuffle technique, with long strides to get depth and stay over the top of routes. Fast processor when working against route combinations. Size has allowed him to work against some opposing tight ends in man coverage. A willing run supporter with a wide radius, Amos has been a pretty reliable tackler throughout his career.
Negatives
Slightly older than some peers and will be 23 on draft day. Amos’ frame is on the thin side. He might be asked to add some additional bulk at the next level. His handsy approach hasn’t gotten him flagged too many times (13 penalties, including one declined, over his career), but could at the next level.
Amos has the tools to play in zone coverage, but was in a man-heavy scheme this past year, so the evaluation is a little bit more difficult. Mostly just defaulted to zone coverage when there was no receiver on that side of the field. Has almost no experience in the slot. His frame might not be the best fit there.
Summary
An experienced cornerback with a favorable trajectory and an excellent combination of size, length, flexibility, fluidity, quickness and speed. However, it would be a disservice to call Amos simply a gifted talent, as he does a great job of anticipating routes and using his hands to provide tight coverage through the snap.
His ability to get his head around and locate the football, combined with his lanky build made him a difficult cornerback to target at the college level. Will consequently get some early consideration on draft day from physical, man-heavy teams.
Projection: Round 1/Round 2
