2025 NFL Draft Scouting Report: Travis Hunter

Travis Hunter (CB – Colorado)

6-foot-1 | 185 Pounds

Background

Travis Hunter was a consensus five-star recruit who was considered by many to be the best in his class. Ended up committing to Jackson State to play under Deion Sanders, where he recorded 19 tackles, two interceptions (one touchdown) and eight breakups in 2022. He missed five games due to an undisclosed injury.

Over nine starts in 2023, he recorded 30 tackles, three interceptions and five breakups, while missing three games due to a lacerated liver. Finished his college career by winning the Heisman Trophy and the Chuck Bednarik Award this past season with 32 tackles, four interceptions and 11 breakups.

Positives

Highly productive three-year starter with escalating output. Relatively tall and lanky for a pro cornerback. Typically lines up on the left side of the defense, playing both press-man and zone at high rates. Quick feet to get depth when dropping into zone coverage, typically from a shuffle technique. Maintains good sight lines to read the quarterback’s eyes from zone coverage. Processes route combinations effectively. Sniffs out screens and closes quickly.

Hunter can bait quarterbacks into throws when playing in zone coverage. Has twitch in man coverage and does a nice job of using his hands to feel routes developing and provide tight coverage through the stem. Has loose hips and the top-end speed to carry receivers down the field on deeper routes. Gets his head around early to locate the football when his back is to the passer.

As a hybrid receiver/cornerback, has the type of aggressive temperament and high-end ball skills you’d expect, with impressive flexibility and body control and very reliable hands. Shows a nice technique to go for the breakup when he’s in the hip pocket. Quickness and flexibility let him sneak around blockers at times in the screen/run games. Not the most physical tackler, but has been pretty reliable there.

Negatives

His frame is on the thin side. Could be more accurate with his off-hand jam from press coverage; some tendency to give up inside leverage on the release. His approach is a little bit aggressive, and route anticipation is developing but not quite elite yet. Would like to see him flatten out a bit more at the stem against in-breaking routes; creates some opportunities for anticipation-based throws on slants, deep-ins, overs, etc.

When there’s drift at the stem, Hunter isn’t always able to get back in-phase and break up the throw in time. Can be grabby at times. Has allowed over half of his career targets to be completed. Gets stuck on blocks in the screen game. Not the most physical tackler. Missed eight games over his first two seasons, which could create durability concerns.

Summary

A lanky, quick, loose-hipped and flexible cornerback with outstanding ball skills and the ability to play in both man or zone coverage, he brings an aggressive approach to the position, allowing him to make some very impressive plays.

It’s been possible to throw his way in school, especially on timing-based throws to in-breaking routes, but Hunter compensates for it with his playmaking skills. He played much better this past season. Has all of the traits teams look for in a No. 1 cornerback. Would likely go within the first few picks even if teams were to view him solely as a cornerback, rather than a two-way player.

For my money, Hunter looks more natural as a receiver but might have more upside at cornerback.

Projection: Round 1
