2025 NFL Draft Scouting Report: LaJohntay Wester

LaJohntay Wester (WR – Colorado)

5-foot-11 | 167 Pounds

Background

LaJohntay Weste is a slot receiver who originally attended Florida Atlantic, where he spent the first four seasons of his career. He caught 18 passes there as a freshman in 2020, then had his first big season, a 63-668-4 (10.6) line, in 2021. Had a somewhat similar year of 62-718-8 (11.6), then enjoyed his most productive collegiate season — 107-1,164-8 (10.9) in 2023 — before transferring to Colorado. Caught 74-931-10 (12.6) for the Buffaloes this season.

Positives

Wester has four years of solid production under his belt. Slot receiver whose usage is somewhat interesting, with some of his snaps coming on the line of scrimmage when the team uses trips or quads to one side of the field. Smooth accelerator with what looks like pretty good overall speed. Primarily an underneath target who shows quick feet with good hip sink and snap at the route stem to create early throwing opportunities.

Most of Wester’s routes come on flats, hitches, screens and others of that nature, but also runs some routes to threaten down the seams on patterns like skinny posts. Body control is impressive, allowing him to adjust to off-target throws. Significantly cut down on drops this past season, with just three against 74 catches, per Pro Football Focus (PFF). Flashes some ability to improvise when the play breaks down. Flashes the awareness and footwork to operate on the sidelines.

Concentration and toughness show up in the fact that he catches just under half of his targets in traffic. Shows an impressive level of intensity and physicality as a blocker. Has prior experience on punt return units, with two career touchdowns there, and shows sharp cuts to weave through traffic.

Negatives

Wester’s frame is on the thin side, even for a slot receiver. He may be asked to add additional bulk/strength. Has very little experience outside of the slot and may not be as suited to playing outside. A lot of his production comes on quick throws underneath zone coverage. He had a lot of open releases behind/underneath other receivers flanking him.

May struggle to get off the line against physical defenders. Can be knocked off of his route relatively easily. Some tendencies to sit down into zone coverage. Drops have been an issue in the past, with 26 over the three seasons from 2021-2023. He doesn’t have the biggest hands. Doesn’t survive contact as a runner.

Summary

A thin, quick slot receiver who shows the ability to create opportunities for quick completions underneath the defense, owing to his hip sink, snap and speed through the stem. Compared to other similarly-built receivers; also shows a surprising amount of toughness in contested-catch situations and as a blocker, although he lacks functional strength and isn’t the most dynamic player after the catch.

Wester’s early route onto the field at the pro level may come as a punt returner, where he’s flashed playmaking ability in school.

Tetairoa McMillan (Arizona)

A very big, smooth, savvy receiver with an incredible catch radius and a graceful game, McMillan established himself as one of the best wide receivers in college football over the past two seasons. May never be the fastest or most explosive wide receiver, but has a great understanding of how to use tempo, nuance and technique to create separation.

Is capable of coming down with contested catches even in tight coverage, with rare size that makes him a mismatch for most cornerbacks. May not have quite the same strength and physicality as Mike Evans did coming out, but is a similar prospect and should go similarly high in the first round, likely within the first five or 10 picks.

Luther Burden III (Missouri)

A dynamic player with the ball in his hands, Burden’s combination of speed, quickness, vision, balance and physicality led the Tigers to scheme up ways to get him the ball, whether on underneath throws, sweeps, screens or otherwise. He also offers some impressive traits as a receiver, with good stop-start quickness to create separation, impressive tracking and body control and a strong pair of hands.

As it currently stands, he doesn’t have a ton of recent experience playing outside and will need to continue diversifying his route tree and polishing his route-running technique, but that doesn’t look like it will stop him from being a first-round pick.

Emeka Egbuka (Ohio State)

Another highly-polished Buckeyes receiver prospect, Egbuka’s excellent combination of acceleration, quickness, route-running savvy, hands and toughness should make him a highly reliable pro receiver.

Likely would have been a first-round pick last year had he stayed healthy. Coming back to put together the season he did gives him a very good chance of going there this year if everything checks out medically during the pre-draft process. A nice reliable, pro-ready big slot option.
