2025 NFL Draft Scouting Report: Kelvin Banks Jr.
Kelvin Banks Jr. (OT – Texas)
6-foot-4 | 320 Pounds
Background
Banks Jr. was a five-star recruit who originally committed to Oregon, but ended up attending Texas after Ducks head coach Mario Cristobal was replaced by Dan Lanning. Immediately stepped in as the Longhorns’ starting left tackle as a freshman, being credited by Pro Football Focus (PFF) with having allowed just four sacks over the past three years.
Positives
Thickly-built, three-year left tackle starter on a team with a balanced rushing attack. Plays the game with toughness and physicality. Has a lot of power in his hands to jolt defenders at the point of attack in the run game. Gets underneath opponents to root them out. Shows very good, consistent leg drive to generate push and clear holes for ball-carriers. Very effective at sealing with down blocks and then making his way up to the second level to engage linebackers. Doesn’t have fantastic movement skills, but plays with discipline and takes good angles.
Banks understands positioning and is very difficult to overpower when walling off defenders. Works hard to sustain through the whistle. Covers a lot of ground with his first step in pass protection to catch and ride defenders bringing speed off the edge. Shows a nice bend in his pass sets, keeping his pad level low and his back straight. Possesses smooth lateral movement skills for such a big man. Drops an early, stable anchor to stonewall bull-rushers at the line. Once he gets locked onto an opponent he has impressive grip strength to stay connected.
Negatives
Height is on the lower end of what teams look for in a pro tackle. Lacks college experience anywhere except left tackle. Arm measurements may be important. Was almost always playing out of a two-point stance during the games reviewed. Needs to fine-tune how aggressive he should be as a puncher. Shows some catch-and-ride tendencies where he’s relying on his anchor, but can also get impatient and end up lunging into opponents at times.
Banks’ aggression in the run game can also cause him to fall off of blocks at times when playing outside of his frame; some leaner tendencies. Penalties started to creep up as a sophomore, going from two flags in 2022 to six in 2023 and seven in 2024. His hands find their way outside when he’s trying to work on the edge.
Summary
A tough three-year starter at left tackle who plays with a low pad level and has a ton of power in his hands and through his frame to generate movement in the run game and anchor against power as a pass protector.
While Banks may not be quite as tall, long and agile as an ideal left tackle, he has provided consistent play for one of college football’s premier programs, with enough kick slide depth and strength to protect the edge against speed and the discipline to secure blocks at the second level. Could theoretically play almost anywhere along the line.
Projection: Round 1
