2025 NFL Draft Scouting Report: Jordan Burch
Jordan Burch (DL – Oregon)
6-foot-6 | 290 Pounds
Background
Jordan Burch was a five-star recruit who originally attended South Carolina, his local university, where he spent three seasons. Totaled 19-3.0-.0.0 as a freshman (196) snaps, 26-3.0-1.0 as a sophomore (334 snaps) and 60-8.0-3.5 after taking over a starting role in 2022 (768 snaps.) Transferred to Oregon for the last two years of his career, going 34-8.0-3.0 in 2023 (428 snaps) and then 31-11.0-8.5 this past year (426 snaps.)
Positives
Three-year starter with solid output for two different programs, who made 2024 his most efficient season yet. A very well-built defensive lineman with pretty ideal size for a five-technique, having added about 20 pounds since transferring from South Carolina. Often lines up there as well, but will also take some snaps out of a two-point stance on passing downs or from a three-point stance with a wider seven-technique.
Burch plays with good knee-bend and flexibility when defending the run between the tackles. Has good length to lock opponents out of his frame, with some quickness in his hands to shed. Shows impressive effort in pursuit. Is an above-average athlete for his size. Has been a reliable tackler throughout his career. Was highly productive as a pass-rusher this past year, with smooth movement skills.
Very impressive flexibility in his hips and ankles to dip the shoulder and work around the edge with speed. Flashes the ability to jolt opponents on contact with his hands and demonstrates a reasonably high level of hand activity. His motor doesn’t quit when his initial move is unsuccessful. Does a nice job of getting his hands up to bat down passes (six this past year.) Has shown he is capable of playing a high number of snaps.
Negatives
Slightly overaged and will turn 24 as a rookie. Not quite as polished as you’d think given his five years in school. Burch’s gap discipline in the run game needs work, especially because his instincts are still a work in progress there. Anchors pretty well at the line, but rarely overwhelms opponents with power to reset the line of scrimmage.
Lets his shoulders get turned when flowing to the ball. Somewhat inconsistent get-off. Still needs to continue to diversify his rush approach and incorporate more counters. More of a smooth and coordinated athlete than an explosive one. Will probably have trouble winning the edge with speed at the next level. Burch’s rush approach is a finesse one, and it’d be nice to see him commit to the bull rush and show some more speed-to-power reps.
Summary
An experienced, well-built and surprisingly smooth defensive lineman who lined up all over the defensive front for the Ducks, showing rare balance, coordination and flexibility for someone his size. At the same time, Burch is still very much a work in progress, with iffy gap discipline and awareness in the run game, and a relatively straightforward finesse-based approach to rushing the passer.
Sort of a big defensive lineman who plays like a smaller one, for better or worse. With more glass in his diet and refinement to his game, has starting-caliber traits, so he could get some second-day looks.
Projection: Round 3
