2025 NFL Draft Scouting Report: Jonah Savaiinaea
Jonah Savaiinaea (OT – Arizona)
6-foot-5 | 336 Pounds
Background
A three-star recruit born in American Samoa, Jonah Savaiinaea started all 12 games at right guard as a true freshman; primarily played right tackle the following year (nine starts versus three at right guard) before becoming a full-time tackle this season. Started six games at right tackle and five at left tackle this past year, allowing four sacks after allowing two in each of his first two seasons.
Positives
Highly versatile three-year starter with experience at right guard, right tackle and left tackle. Savaiinaea is very well-built for a pro lineman, with excellent thickness throughout his frame and long arms. Understands positioning and his size makes him difficult to work around when he’s walling off in the run game. Does a good job of staying within his frame; avoids lunging or lowering his helmet. Can get out in space a little bit, whether pulling or climbing. Typically plays with patience to maintain his form.
Shows a very strong grip to stay connected through the whistle once engaged. Knows how to generate torque with his upper body. Sling opponents to the ground when he’s got a grip. Takes advantage of chances to finish and pancake opponents. Naturally strong and plays with enough width in his base to stop bull-rushers from walking him back into the passer.
Savaiinaea doesn’t have the most incredible lateral quickness, but keeps calm and stays in his stance when dealing with speed, using his frame to protect the edge. Would like to see him punch the chest more consistently, but is proactive with his hands to prevent opponents from getting into his frame. Has enough agility to chip one opponent and secure a block on a delayed rusher coming on a tight twist or stunt. Has only been flagged five times in three years.
Negatives
Looks a bit lumbering when he’s pulling across the formation on counter/power plays. Can struggle to line up opponents in space. Hand placement is more commonly on the shoulders than on the chest plates.
It would be nice to see Savaiinaea take more consistent initiative in pass protection. Will lapse into relying on his anchor to absorb power, rather than trying to jolt opposing rushers with punches high and inside. Struggles to get his feet going again once he’s planted them. Gives up some pressure on the second effort.
Summary
A big, thick, strong and experienced lineman who has started at three spots along the line over the past three years. While Savaiinaea isn’t the most athletic prospect, he does a good job of staying within his frame and playing with balance, using his big frame to wall off opponents.
Hand placement could be more consistent overall. Because of his natural power and strong grip, he can still assert his will over opposing defenders. Looks like a safe bet to start somewhere on the right side of a pro offensive line, at either tackle or guard.
Projection: Round 1
