2025 NFL Draft Scouting Report: JaCorey Brooks

JaCorey Brooks (WR – Louisville)

6-foot-3 | 195 Pounds

Background

JaCorey Brooks committed to Alabama from the IMG Academy, where he spent the first three seasons of his collegiate career. He caught 15-192-2 as a freshman, then 39-674-8 (17.3) after taking over a starting role in the sixth game of the team’s 2022 season. Brookes hauled in just three passes the following season while dealing with a shoulder injury. He then transferred to Louisville, where he posted a 61-1,013-9 (16.6) line this past season.

Positives

Brooks is a tall, lanky wide receiver who dramatically increased his production this past season. Lined up all over the formation, primarily but not exclusively outside and on the line of scrimmage. Ran a lot of routes downfield, including on sideline shots, posts, double-moves and sometimes over the middle of the field on overs and other patterns of that nature. Is a legitimate deep threat who’s averaged over 16 yards per catch throughout his career.

Brooks shows quick feet to release at the line of scrimmage against press coverage. Fast and smooth receiver with loose hips. Doesn’t need to gear down much through his stems. Presents a big target due to his size, length and flexibility. Can pull in highlight-reel throws away from his frame, making good adjustments to the ball. Was highly effective in contested catch situations this past year, catching 16 out of 23 such passes (69.6%), per Pro Football Focus (PFF).

Does a nice job of going up to get high-point throws. Not the most elusive runner after the catch, but has some agility/flexibility to make the occasional defender miss, often with back-jukes. Has some prior experience on special-teams units.

Negatives

Brooks is tall but his frame is on the thin side. His game is raw for a fourth-year player. Could stand to be a little bit more efficient with his releases against press coverage. Has clean feet, but sometimes does too much at the line. Can struggle to stay on track through contact because of his lack of ideal functional strength. Routes aren’t the snappiest at the stem and is a high-cut player who doesn’t have much hip sink.

Shows drift on his routes to let defenders back in-phase. Doesn’t stack opposing corners as consistently as he should because of his limited route-running nuance. Has had problems with drops throughout his career, including seven this past season. Not particularly dynamic after the catch. Brooks doesn’t make too many defenders miss and doesn’t survive contact as a runner. Doesn’t give the most effort as a blocker. His functional strength is average, at best. His 2023 shoulder injury will require further investigation.

Summary

A toolsy prospect who has an impressive combination of height, length, speed, flexibility and body control, Brooks rebounded from a lost season to a nagging shoulder injury to put together a strong 2024 campaign. That favorable development trajectory looks critical because his game is very raw, with issues ranging from functional strength to route-running to hands to blocking.

Probably more of a mid-to-late-round upside-based flier.

More 2025 NFL Draft Scouting Reports for Wide Receivers

Tetairoa McMillan (Arizona)

A very big, smooth, savvy receiver with an incredible catch radius and a graceful game, McMillan established himself as one of the best wide receivers in college football over the past two seasons. May never be the fastest or most explosive wide receiver, but has a great understanding of how to use tempo, nuance and technique to create separation.

Is capable of coming down with contested catches even in tight coverage, with rare size that makes him a mismatch for most cornerbacks. May not have quite the same strength and physicality as Mike Evans did coming out, but is a similar prospect and should go similarly high in the first round, likely within the first five or 10 picks.

Projection: Round 1

Luther Burden III (Missouri)

A dynamic player with the ball in his hands, Burden’s combination of speed, quickness, vision, balance and physicality led the Tigers to scheme up ways to get him the ball, whether on underneath throws, sweeps, screens or otherwise. He also offers some impressive traits as a receiver, with good stop-start quickness to create separation, impressive tracking and body control and a strong pair of hands.

As it currently stands, he doesn’t have a ton of recent experience playing outside and will need to continue diversifying his route tree and polishing his route-running technique, but that doesn’t look like it will stop him from being a first-round pick.

Projection: Round 1

Emeka Egbuka (Ohio State)

Another highly-polished Buckeyes receiver prospect, Egbuka’s excellent combination of acceleration, quickness, route-running savvy, hands and toughness should make him a highly reliable pro receiver.

Likely would have been a first-round pick last year had he stayed healthy. Coming back to put together the season he did gives him a very good chance of going there this year if everything checks out medically during the pre-draft process. A nice reliable, pro-ready big slot option.

Projection: Round 1
