2025 NFL Draft Scouting Report: Shemar Stewart

Shemar Stewart (DE – Texas A&M)

6-foot-6 | 290 Pounds

Background

Considered one of the top recruits in the 2022 recruiting class out of Miami, Shemar Stewart has been an important contributor for the Aggies since his freshman season. Posted 23-4.0-1.5 over 416 snaps in 2022 (six starts) and a line of 11-2.0-1.5 in a reserve role as a sophomore (318 snaps, one start). He enjoyed his best season in 2024, taking over a full-time starting role opposite Nic Scourton.

Positives

Three-year contributor for a major program, with a favorable trajectory. A massive defensive lineman who plays on the end of the Aggies’ three-man defensive front, often out of a four-point stance, but will sometimes even play out of a two-point stance. Very sturdily-built player with excellent contact balance and the type of strong anchor you’d expect given his size; can easily hold the point of attack when defending the run. Plays with good knee bend and overall coordination for a big man. Generally keeps his shoulders square to the line when flowing laterally.

Surprisingly mobile and rangy in pursuit and can get out to the sidelines to defend the run or chase receivers in the screen game; also shows very good conditioning and a strong motor for such a big man. More of a two-gapper, but has a little bit of shiftiness off the line to threaten gaps. Stewart gets his feet moving after contact and can walk back opposing blockers with his bull-rush on passing downs. His size also allows him to draw some extra attention from opposing linemen. Active with his hands. Shows surprising bend when dipping his shoulder around the edge.

Negatives

Stewart’s frame may not be the best fit for most even fronts, as he is on the tall side for an interior lineman. Because of the scheme he played in, has relatively few snaps on tape where he’s playing on the interior of the line as well, complicating his projection. Doesn’t always do the best job of maximizing his length; some tendencies to throw his body around and try to bash his way through opponents, rather than locking them out of his frame.

His instincts/play recognition skills are still developing. Hasn’t been the most reliable tackler despite his size and strength. Relies heavily on his athletic and physical tools as a pass-rusher. Will need to improve his hand use and diversify his rush approach at the next level; more active than skilled with his hands at this point.

Summary

A physical and athletic specimen with the type of power and anchor strength his size would suggest, but he also has much better athleticism than usual, as reflected by the fact Texas A&M often asked him to play out of a two-point stance. Having taken a big step forward this past season, Stewart has established himself as a high-upside prospect with unique versatility. Fits best as a two-gap five-technique end who could potentially slide inside on passing downs.
